Job Summary
The System Quality Engineer (SQE) for Hardware-Only projects is responsible for providing independent quality governance, assurance, and oversight across the project lifecycle. This role ensures that project risks, health status, and validation evidence are accurately represented, visible, and aligned with actual conditions.
The SQE serves as a quality subject matter expert (SME) and advisor, reinforcing accountability with Project Managers (PMs) and project teams while identifying and escalating risks, gaps, and recurring issues. This position maintains clear boundaries between oversight and execution, ensuring project teams retain delivery ownership.
Key Responsibilities:
Governance & Quality Oversight:
Perform regular project health assessments to validate alignment between reported and actual conditions
Provide independent oversight of project quality, risk visibility, and governance processes
Monitor key governance artifacts (RIDAC, PHA, compliance metrics) for accuracy and completeness
Risk, Issue, and Data Validation
Review project risk and issue tracking (RIDAC) for quality, aging, categorization, and visibility
Identify incomplete, outdated, or inaccurate data and flag for PM correction
Escalate recurring or unresolved issues to maintain transparency and accountability
Ensure ownership of risk and issue management remains with the Project Manager
Project Health & Reporting:
Validate Project Health Assessment (PHA) against verified project conditions
Identify and challenge misalignment between reported status and actual progress
Support consistent and accurate quality reporting (e.g., weekly updates)
Risk Identification & Escalation:
Proactively identify risks, gaps, and inconsistencies
Differentiate between isolated issues and systemic patterns
Escalate recurring issues and support corrective action through governance channels
Quality Standards & Documentation:
Define and maintain quality documentation standards, templates, and runbooks
Ensure validation evidence requirements are clearly established and understood
Support audit readiness by ensuring documentation is accessible and complete
Validation & Evidence Assurance:
Verify that validation activities have been completed and are supported by evidence
Confirm documentation demonstrates:
What was validated
Who performed validation
When validation occurred
Escalate gaps in validation evidence or documentation
Stakeholder Engagement:
Provide guidance to PMs and project teams on quality expectations and governance standards
Reinforce accountability and role clarity across project teams
Redirect execution-related requests to appropriate owners
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Information Systems, Quality Management, or related field (or equivalent experience)
Experience in project quality assurance, governance, or systems engineering
Strong understanding of risk management, project lifecycle, and quality processes
Experience working with project tracking and reporting tools (e.g., ADO, ServiceNow, or similar)
Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience supporting hardware-only or infrastructure-focused projects
Familiarity with governance frameworks, audit processes, and compliance standards
Experience with requirements traceability, validation practices, or quality reporting tools
Ability to operate effectively in cross-functional and matrixed environments
Scope of Responsibility (Role Boundaries)
SQE Responsibilities:
Governance, assurance, and quality oversight
Validation of project data, reporting accuracy, and risk visibility
Identification and escalation of issues and gaps
Definition of quality standards and documentation expectations
Out of Scope Responsibilities:
Creating, updating, or maintaining RIDAC items
Correcting project schedules or performing data cleanup
Executing project deliverables or recovery activities
Performing administrative or operational project tasks
Expanding beyond governance, assurance, and reporting responsibilities
