OVERVIEW OF POSITION:
Under the direction of the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) or applicable Medical Director, the staff
supervising physician is responsible for providing clinical oversight, consultation, and delegation of
prescribing authority to Advanced Practice Providers (APPs)—including Nurse Practitioners, Physician
Assistants, and Certified Nurse Midwives—consistent with accepted professional standards and the
Michigan Public Health Code.
Must adhere to the organizational Policies, Procedures, Code of Ethics, and all licensing and accreditation
standards of the position. Must represent the organization's Mission in all actions and communications.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Provide guidance, clinical oversight, and delegation of prescribing authority to Nurse
Practitioners, Physician Assistants, or Certified Nurse Midwives through a formal collaborative
physician agreement.
• Be available during standard hours of operation via telephone or electronic consultation to discuss
management plans and complex patient cases as clinically indicated.
• Conduct at least one quarterly face-to-face meeting (virtual acceptable) with each delegated APP
to include chart reviews of complex patient cases, evaluating a minimum of 5 patient charts per
quarter.
• Evaluate and monitor the APP’s practice, ensuring tasks are delegated and supervised in
accordance with law, regulation, and within the knowledge and experience of the APP.
• Delegate prescribing authority to APPs within the scope of the supervising physician and the skill
level of the APP, including nonscheduled prescription medications and delegated Schedules II to
V controlled substances.
• Review and ensure APPs practice medicine independently within Cherry Health locations across
approved scopes, including health maintenance examinations, procedures per privileging,
management of acute/chronic illness or injury, and health counseling.
• Confirm alternative physician coverage is available for consultation in the event the primary
supervising physician is temporarily unavailable.
• Ensure all phone consultations, management plans, and resulting care plans are appropriately
documented and acknowledged in the patient’s medical record.
• Follow clinic policies, procedures, and protocols, to achieve goals and objectives.
• Strive to achieve high quality metrics under the direction of Cherry Health's Quality Assurance
program.
• Understand and adhere to CSHS's compliance standards as they appear in CSHS's Corporate
Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy including HIPAA.
• Keep abreast of all pertinent federal, state and CSHS's regulations, laws, and policies as they
presently exist and as they change or are modified.
• Other duties as assigned.
SKILLS / KNOWLEDGE / ABILITIES:
• Basic Life Support/CPR training according to requirements of license and/or certification.
• Tact and similar qualities necessary in meeting and dealing effectively with others, in person
and on the telephone.
• Willingness to work hours as required to provide phone consultation coverage during site
operations.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff members and delegated
APPs.
• Understand and follow complex written and oral instructions.
• Effectively communicate orally with diverse individuals and groups.
• Exercise good judgment in appraising clinical situations and making collaborative decisions.
• Work with limited supervision and accept and utilize feedback when given.
• Identify and maintain agency and other confidential information.
• Work in a variety of settings such as the traditional office, telehealth, or remotely via telephone
consultation as authorized by Cherry Health sites.
• Work with people of different cultures.
• Excellent professional demeanor, consultative guidance, and time management skills.
• Proficient computer skills, including comfort utilizing Electronic Health Records (EHR) for
remote chart reviews.

EDUCATION / LICENSES / CERTIFICATES:
• Licensed to practice medicine (MD or DO) in the State of Michigan.
• Board certification or eligibility in an appropriate primary care or medical specialty
• Active State of Michigan Controlled Substance License and federal DEA registration.
• Insurable for liability coverage as a primary care/supervising physician in the State of Michigan
required.
• Remain up to date in medical advances through continuing medical education.
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
• Equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the
essential duties of the job listed above. Previous experience establishing collaborative practice
agreements or supervising APPs is highly preferred.
