About the Job
We are seeking experienced Set and Production Design Experts to evaluate set designs, production environments and spatial concepts across film, television, theatre, commercials, photography and live events.

In this role, you will use your professional industry knowledge to assess the quality, practicality and creative effectiveness of production design work. You will review design concepts, visual references, layouts and production briefs, evaluating how effectively they translate the creative vision into functional, visually compelling and production-ready environments.

This opportunity is particularly suited to professionals with hands-on experience in production design, set design, art direction, set decoration or theatre design who can provide thoughtful, structured and well-reasoned written assessments.

  • Engagement Type: Independent Contractor.
  • Location: Fully remote, open to qualified professionals worldwide.
  • Working Hours: Flexible and dependent on project availability and assignment requirements.
  • Workload: Project-based, with assignments offered according to business needs and expert availability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate Design Concepts: Review set designs, room layouts, production environments and visual concepts against creative briefs, scripts and project requirements.
  • Assess Visual Effectiveness: Evaluate composition, scale, proportions, spatial arrangement, color palettes, textures, materials and overall visual coherence.
  • Review Camera and Performance Practicality: Assess sightlines, camera angles, framing, lighting considerations, actor movement and the functional use of the space.
  • Identify Production Risks: Highlight potential issues that could affect execution, including impractical layouts, unsuitable materials, inaccurate period details, continuity concerns or construction limitations.
  • Assess Creative Alignment: Determine whether proposed designs effectively support the story, setting, atmosphere, characters and intended visual direction.
  • Evaluate Budget and Feasibility: Consider whether design concepts are realistic within the available budget, production schedule and technical constraints.
  • Provide Structured Feedback: Document findings and explain the reasoning behind each assessment, highlighting strengths, weaknesses, risks and opportunities for improvement.
  • Compare Design Alternatives: Where multiple concepts are provided, determine which solution best meets the creative and practical requirements and explain why.

Requirements

  • Professional experience in one or more of the following roles:
    • Production Designer
    • Set Designer
    • Art Director
    • Set Decorator
    • Assistant Art Director
    • Theatre Designer
    • Scenic Designer
    • Related production or spatial design positions.
  • Demonstrated involvement in real-world productions, including experience with creative briefs, scripts, budgets, set construction, installation, filming or production execution.
  • Strong understanding of spatial design, visual storytelling, composition, materials, textures, color theory and production environments.
  • Practical knowledge of how sets and designed spaces function for performers, cameras, lighting and production crews.
  • Ability to identify design inconsistencies, technical limitations and potential execution challenges.
  • Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills, with the ability to assess creative work objectively.
  • Excellent written English and the ability to communicate professional judgments clearly and concisely.
