AI Summary

Lead and mentor a remote-first scrum team of senior software engineers while driving engineering excellence and operational standards across the organization. Partner with executive leadership to shape technical strategy, AI adoption, and delivery practices for substance use disorder care technology.

Overview

The Senior SW Engineering Manager is a strategic engineering leader responsible for managing a high-performing, remote-first scrum team while contributing to the broader direction of theengineering organization. This role combines direct team management with ownership of engineering operations, delivery practices, and technical strategy in support of substance use disorder (SUD) care delivery.

This position is fully remote, however, for this role, we are prioritizing candidates who align with the Eastern time zone (EDT/EST) for consistent overlap and availability with our core clinical and operational teams.

Beyond day-to-day team leadership, the Senior Engineering Manager drives engineering excellence across the organization: shaping how teams plan and deliver, defining approaches toAI adoption and engineering productivity, establishing standards for quality and process, and representing engineering in leadership-level planning conversations.

This role operates as a strategic partner to the SVP Technology, with significant autonomy to identify problems, develop solutions, and drive outcomes across the engineering function.

The ideal candidate brings deep experience in engineering management, a track record of building and scaling delivery organizations, and the judgment to balance execution withstrategic investment. They are equally comfortable running a sprint and shaping a quarterly roadmap. They lead with influence, operate with a high degree of independence, and bring mature perspectives on how modern engineering teams should work.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions: ● Team Management:○ Lead, mentor, and manage a remote scrum team of senior software engineers, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.○ Drive individual development planning, regular feedback, and performance management; set a high bar for engineering talent and invest in the growth of each team member.○ Recruit, onboard, and develop engineering talent, including evaluating and managing engineers engaged through outsourced or nearshore/offshore partnerships.○ Foster an inclusive, supportive, and high-performing team culture built on psychological safety and trust.○ Mentor and coach other engineering leaders and senior individual contributors within the organization. ● Delivery & Execution: ○ Own end-to-end delivery of engineering commitments, collaborating with the team to set achievable sprint goals and deliver high-quality software on time.○ Establish and evolve team delivery practices — including sprint planning, backlog refinement, estimation, retrospectives, and release management — rather than simply facilitating existing processes.○ Monitor delivery health and quality metrics; proactively identify and address blockers, risks, and dependencies across teams.○ Balance technical debt remediation with product feature delivery, making pragmatic prioritization decisions in collaboration with product and engineering leadership.○ Ensure software is developed to meet security, compliance, and regulatory standards applicable to healthcare technology environments (e.g., HIPAA). ● Engineering Operations & Strategy:○ Contribute to the strategic direction of the engineering organization, including team structure, investment allocation, build-vs-buy decisions, and outsourcing strategy.○ Define and lead the team’s approach to AI adoption and engineering productivity — driving experimentation, establishing team-level conventions and guardrails, and measuring impact on delivery outcomes.○ Establish and maintain engineering-wide standards for code quality, development practices, tooling, and operational excellence.○ Drive multi-team coordination across the engineering organization, including work allocation, cross-team dependency management, and shared roadmap planning.○ Represent engineering in leadership-level conversations, contributing an informed perspective on capacity, feasibility, risk, and technical direction. ● Cross-Functional Collaboration:○ Drive roadmap alignment with Product Management — actively shaping what the team builds and why, not just executing against a product-defined backlog.○ Collaborate with data, clinical, and operations teams to support platform integrations, data pipeline needs, and clinical workflow technology.○ Serve as a primary point of contact for vendor and outsourcing partners, managing relationships at both the strategic and delivery level.○ Communicate engineering status, risks, and strategic recommendations clearlyto executive and non-technical stakeholders. ● Technical Leadership:○ Maintain sufficient technical fluency to support technical decision-making and participate meaningfully in architecture discussions, code reviews, and design decisions.○ Ensure alignment with architectural principles, coding standards, and best practices across the team. ○ Encourage and facilitate pair programming, code reviews, and knowledge sharing to raise the collective technical bar.○ Evaluate and drive adoption of new tools, platforms, and development practices that improve team productivity and product quality.○ Oversee engineering contributions to data platform initiatives, including ETL pipelines, third-party integrations, and data infrastructure improvements.Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these essential functions.

Qualifications

● Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field required from an accredited college; advanced degree preferred.● 5–7+ years of direct engineering management experience, with demonstrated success leading and scaling software delivery teams.● 7+ years of hands-on software engineering experience, with a track record of delivering scalable and maintainable solutions.● Demonstrated experience managing remote, distributed engineering teams using Agile/Scrum methodologies.● Experience operating across multiple teams, including multi-team coordination, shared roadmap planning, and cross-team dependency management.● Track record of establishing or significantly evolving delivery practices, engineering standards, or operational processes — not just inheriting and running them.● Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to influence at the leadership level, navigate organizational dynamics, and align cross-functional stakeholders.● Access to reliable internet and telephone services, specifically 10M download and 5M upload packages or higher as well as a strong WiFi signal from your remote work location.● Must meet pre-employment requirements and maintain all applicable state and job- related guidelines for background screening.

● Depending on state-specific requirements, this may include fingerprinting, drug testing, health screening, and license/credential verifications.
