Project Overview: In this role, you will be a key driver in building and modernizing complex, content-rich web platforms. You will join a collaborative engineering team focused on creating highly tailored WordPress experiences, leveraging modern PHP 8.x, React, and Gutenberg. A significant part of the project involves migrating existing systems from a Laravel architecture into a robust, scalable WordPress environment. As a Senior PHP & WordPress Engineer, you will architect thoughtful domain logic, build dynamic editorial experiences, and utilize AI-assisted development tools (like Claude Code) daily to accelerate and elevate your engineering output.

Key Responsibilities

• Modern PHP Development: Design and build robust backend systems using modern PHP 8.x, strict typing, object-oriented design, and dependency management via Composer.
• WordPress Architecture: Develop custom plugins, hooks, filters, custom post types, and REST APIs while adhering to top-tier WordPress security and caching practices.
• Editorial Experience: Build custom Gutenberg blocks and dynamic editorial interfaces using React and the @wordpress/* package ecosystem.
• System Design & Migration: Architect scalable application structures, defining clear domain logic, service boundaries, and data models, while assisting in migrations from legacy Laravel systems.
• Testing & Quality Assurance: Write and maintain comprehensive unit and integration tests using PHPUnit and Jest as a core part of the development lifecycle.
• AI-Assisted Engineering: Work alongside AI agents (like Claude Code) daily, writing clear prompts, providing context, and rigorously reviewing and testing AI-generated code before deployment.

Must-Have Skills

• Modern PHP Mastery: Deep expertise in PHP 8.x, strict typing, enums, readonly properties, match, exceptions, namespaces, and solid OOP API design over procedural callbacks.
• WordPress Engineering: Proven experience with WP_Query, REST API, multisite, WP-CLI, caching, security practices, and custom taxonomies/metadata.
• Gutenberg & React: Strong proficiency in building dynamic/server-rendered custom blocks and working with React, asynchronous JavaScript, ES modules, and webpack-based environments.
• Application Architecture: A strong architectural mindset with experience in domain logic, dependency injection, and maintainable data models.
• Testing Rigor: Hands-on experience with PHPUnit, Jest, data providers, and familiarity with the Arrange / Act / Assert testing pattern.
• Web Fundamentals: Deep understanding of HTTP, SQL, browser/server behavior, input sanitization, output escaping, prepared queries, and authentication.
• DevOps & Git Collaboration: Comfort with Docker-based local environments, CLI tooling, advanced Git workflows (rebasing, conflict resolution), and delivering high-quality pull requests and code reviews.
• AI Collaboration: Practical experience using AI coding assistants, with the ability to critically review, test, and guide the agent's output.

Nice-to-Have Skills

• Enterprise WordPress: Experience with WordPress VIP (edge cache, VIP Search / Elasticsearch, vip-cli).
• SEO & Performance: Knowledge of schema.org / JSON-LD, sitemaps, and Core Web Vitals optimization.
• Advanced Tooling: Familiarity with TypeScript, Playwright, and handling large-scale content migrations.
• PHP Frameworks: Experience with Laravel, Symfony, or another modern PHP framework (highly valuable for systems being migrated from a Laravel architecture).

Time Zone & Collaboration: This role is 100% remote from LATAM and requires consistent overlap with teams in Central Time (CT). Flexibility is expected to accommodate key ceremonies, stand-ups, and collaborative sessions within standard Austin business hours.

Language: All interviews, documentation, and daily communication are in English.
