AI Summary

You will build and maintain the Integration Fabric on AWS using event-driven services to connect internal products and external systems. Additionally, you will mentor two mid-level engineers, set technical standards, and ensure the reliability and scalability of integration workflows.

This is a remote position.

About Herdwatch

Herdwatch is Ireland's leading livestock management platform, used by tens of thousands of farmers across Ireland, the UK, and North America. VetDrive — a cloud-based veterinary practice management platform used by 150+ clinics — is part of the Herdwatch group. We're hiring a backend team, based in Pakistan, to build Herdwatch's new Integration Fabric: the layer that lets our products talk to each other and to outside systems once, instead of every product building its own connection every time.

The first real use of it is VetLink, which pushes medicine purchases from our vet software into the farmer app so a farmer stops typing them in by hand. Our architect, Mykola, owns the overall design and the canonical data model — so you're not being asked to invent the architecture, you're being asked to build well against it.

The Role

This is the senior hire on a three-person backend team, and it's as much a mentoring role as a building one. You'll set the patterns the other two engineers follow, review their work, and raise the standard of how integrations are built — while still shipping production code yourself every week. We're not looking for seniority for its own sake; we're thin in the middle, and we'd rather wait for the right person than fill the seat quickly.

What we're really after: a generalist

We want engineers who take on the work the business needs and move between an existing API and a brand-new service without treating either as someone else's property. You'll work on things you enjoy, but that can't be the only mode. We want AI to be a normal part of how the work gets done, not something people do quietly on the side — that's the direction we're heading. But it's being built, and the people we hire now will help build it. So we're screening for aptitude and appetite, not a badge: someone who has genuinely used these tools on real work, has a view on where they help and where they get in the way, and wants to shape how we use them.

How we work

Fully remote from Pakistan, with a few hours' daily overlap with the Ireland-based team

Agile sprints with planning, standups, reviews, and retros

Direct collaboration with product, architecture (Mykola), and the wider Herdwatch/VetDrive teams

You'll give and receive thorough, constructive code review

Requirements

What you'll do

Build the Integration Fabric on AWS: event-driven services using SQS/SNS, Lambda, EventBridge, Step Functions, S3, and API Gateway

Extend the canonical data model (with Mykola) that standardises data from many sources into one consistent internal representation

Build connectors that ingest from and deliver to external partner systems, transforming between source, canonical, and destination formats with schema and business-rule validation

Engineer for reliability: idempotency, deduplication, ordering, dead-letter queues, replay, and retry/backoff — delivery that holds up when external systems are down

Ship VetLink and the integrations that follow it end to end — designed, built, tested, monitored, with runbooks in place

Maintain and modernise Herdwatch's existing integrations (government/compliance APIs, IoT feeds, supply-chain partners, third-party software; some older ones are in PHP)

Mentor: review pull requests, set standards, unblock the two mid-level engineers, and be a part of their growth within the team.

What we're looking for

6+ years building and operating backend or integration services in production, with genuine end-to-end ownership — you've designed, built, shipped, and run systems, not just extended them

Strong hands-on AWS with the serverless and messaging primitives: SQS/SNS, Lambda, S3, and ideally EventBridge, Step Functions, API Gateway, CloudWatch, and Secrets Manager

Strong backend engineering in a modern language — Node.js, TypeScript, Python or similar. We write new integration services in Go; we don't expect you to have it already, but you should pick up a new language quickly and help shape our tooling. Cloud-native, not framework-bound

Deep, practical grasp of integration and messaging patterns: event-driven architecture, queuing and ordering, idempotency, dead-letter queues, replay, and retry/backoff

Comfortable with data formats and transformation: JSON, XML/XSD, and CSV — parsing, validation, and mapping

Solid API skills (designing and consuming REST) plus the unglamorous realities of partner integration (SOAP, SFTP, batch files)

A track record of mentoring or leading engineers — you've raised a team's standard, not just your own

Genuine, hands-on use of AI tools on real work, with a view on where they help and where they get in the way

Strong problem-solving and debugging skills. You are the person who traces a failed message through five systems to find the root cause

Comfortable with structured logging and monitoring, and building observable systems

Nice to have

       Production Go experience

PHP — several existing integrations use it, and you'll help maintain and gradually migrate them

A transformation language such as XSLT or DataWeave

Infrastructure as code (Terraform, CDK, or CloudFormation) and CI/CD pipelines

Streaming and storage beyond the basics: Kinesis, DynamoDB, OpenSearch

Experience with government/regulated or GDPR-sensitive data domains

AgriTech, IoT, or supply-chain exposure; or an enterprise integration platform (MuleSoft, Boomi, Camel) — the patterns transfer, though ours is built in-house on AWS
