Senior Full Stack Engineer (TypeScript) - Hourly Contract

We’re looking for senior Full Stack Engineers with strong TypeScript skills to join Stevens on an hourly contract basis for upcoming client engagements.

We’re looking for versatile engineers who can work across an application, understand how the pieces fit together, and take ownership of delivering working software. Depending on the engagement, you may build new products, extend existing platforms, modernize applications, develop internal tools, or integrate enterprise systems. You should be comfortable moving between frontend interfaces, backend services, databases, and production troubleshooting as the work requires.

You’ll be assigned to a Stevens delivery pod alongside engineers, architects, designers, technical delivery leadership, and client stakeholders. We expect our engineers to contribute to technical decisions, ask thoughtful questions, and turn ambiguous requirements into reliable, maintainable solutions.

Depending on the engagement, you will:

• Build and maintain full stack applications using TypeScript.
• Develop responsive, accessible interfaces using React or similar modern frontend frameworks.
• Design and implement backend services, APIs, and business logic using Node.js.
• Design data models, write queries, and manage database migrations.
• Integrate third-party services and existing enterprise systems.
• Implement authentication, authorization, input validation, and secure data handling.
• Work with designers and client stakeholders to translate requirements into usable software.
• Extend and improve existing codebases, including debugging unfamiliar systems.
• Write appropriate automated tests and participate in code reviews.
• Support deployments, observability, and production troubleshooting.
• Make practical tradeoffs across delivery speed, maintainability, performance, and cost.
• Own features and technical work from initial design through production delivery.

This role is currently limited to contractors located in the United States.

Requirements

• Strong professional software engineering experience with demonstrated ownership of production applications.
• Strong TypeScript and JavaScript development skills across frontend and backend environments.
• Experience building production interfaces with React or a comparable modern frontend framework.
• Experience developing backend applications and services with Node.js.
• Solid understanding of HTML, CSS, responsive design, accessibility, and browser behavior.
• Experience designing, building, and integrating APIs.
• Experience with relational databases such as PostgreSQL, including schema design, SQL, and migrations.
• Understanding of application security, authentication, authorization, and common web vulnerabilities.
• Experience with automated testing, Git, code reviews, and CI/CD workflows.
• Experience deploying and supporting applications in a cloud environment.
• Ability to troubleshoot issues across the frontend, backend, database, and external integrations.
• Ability to work effectively in unfamiliar codebases and learn technologies as an engagement requires.
• Sound engineering judgment and the ability to break ambiguous problems into executable work.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, including communicating technical decisions to non-technical stakeholders.
• Ability to participate in client and team meetings during U.S. business hours when required.
• Must be located in the United States and legally authorized to work in the United States.

Experience in one or more of the following is a plus:

• Next.js or other full stack TypeScript frameworks.
• AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
• Background jobs, queues, caching, and event-driven systems.
• Enterprise integrations, identity providers, and single sign-on.
• Application modernization and working with legacy systems.
• Performance optimization, observability, and production incident investigation.
• Integrating AI or LLM capabilities into applications.
• Consulting, professional services, or other customer-facing engineering environments.

You do not need experience with every technology listed above. We place significantly more weight on engineering depth, technical judgment, adaptability, and demonstrated experience shipping production software than familiarity with any particular framework.

Candidates may be asked to complete additional technical assessments or screening as part of the selection process. Depending on the engagement, additional technical or client interviews may also be required.

Benefits

This is an hourly independent contractor (1099) position, not a salaried full-time role.

• Compensation: $65–$95 USD per hour, based on relevant experience and qualifications. This is an hourly independent contractor (1099) engagement. Hours may vary based on client and project requirements.
