Senior FHIR Platform Engineer (Remote Opportunity)

We are currently looking for a Senior FHIR Integration Engineer for a 100% remote position supporting a large federal government healthcare modernization project. This role will design, develop, implement, and support healthcare interoperability solutions using FHIR standards and related technologies, with a strong focus on HAPI FHIR, standards-based APIs, US Core, SMART on FHIR, FHIR Bulk Data, CDS Hooks, electronic case reporting, and MDM integrations. The engineer will work on advanced interoperability initiatives and provide technical leadership across complex healthcare integration projects.

The role operates in a highly collaborative environment, partnering with architects, interface engineers, application developers, testers, onboarding teams, vendors, and external healthcare partners to deliver secure, scalable, standards-compliant solutions.

The candidate must reside within the continental US.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, implement, and support healthcare interoperability solutions using FHIR standards, HAPI FHIR, and related technologies.
• Design and implement standards-based APIs and FHIR capabilities, including US Core profiles, SMART on FHIR, FHIR Bulk Data export, CDS Hooks, electronic case reporting, and asynchronous MDM integration.
• Evaluate technical requirements, integration constraints, and healthcare data-exchange needs to determine appropriate implementation approaches and solution designs.
• Develop and maintain FHIR implementation guidance, vendor-facing integration documentation, developer documentation, and detailed integration specifications.
• Support integration testing, troubleshooting, performance optimization, security, validation, and production readiness for FHIR-based solutions.
• Collaborate with architects, interface engineers, application developers, testers, onboarding teams, vendors, and external partners to ensure interoperability solutions are standards-compliant, scalable, and supportable.
• Take on additional tasks and responsibilities as needed to support team objectives and ensure the success of the project.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Healthcare Informatics, or a related field and 10+ years of related professional experience.
• Extensive experience designing and implementing healthcare interoperability solutions using FHIR and HL7 standards.
• Hands-on experience with HAPI FHIR, FHIR resource modeling, profiles, implementation guides, validation, and conformance.
• Strong experience developing RESTful APIs and integration solutions using Java and Spring Boot.
• Strong problem-solving, analytical, and technical solution-design skills with the ability to evaluate complex integration requirements.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work autonomously and provide technical leadership across multidisciplinary teams.

Additional Qualifications

• Experience with US Core, SMART on FHIR, FHIR Bulk Data, CDS Hooks, electronic case reporting, and asynchronous Master Data Management integrations.
• Experience integrating Electronic Health Records, Health Information Exchanges, healthcare applications, and other clinical systems using established healthcare data standards.
• Experience with healthcare API security, access controls, integration testing, and production-readiness activities.
• Experience supporting federal healthcare programs or working with government healthcare organizations such as the Department of Veterans Affairs, Department of Health and Human Services, or Defense Health Agency is preferred.

• U.S. Citizenship is required.
• All selected candidates must successfully complete a background check.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Government/Public Trust clearance, including required fingerprinting, when required for the position.
