Sparkfund is the deployment services company utilities rely on to take DERs from grid edge to grid core.
With over a decade of experience as a utility services company, Sparkfund has pioneered a smarter approach to deploying distributed assets as part of a fast-growing grid. Through its Distributed Capacity Procurement (DCP) model, Sparkfund enables utilities to plan, deploy, and dispatch DERs at the scale and pace necessary to meet load growth demand and unlock the full value of the grid. We support program design, assessment of DER grid value, host engagement, and value chain management to ensure on-time, on-budget deployment of distributed resources with maximum grid value and lowest cost.
With more than 3,500 projects deployed across 43 states and more than 300MW of energized assets constructed, Sparkfund is transforming buildings into a valuable extension of the grid for the benefit of our society.

The electric grid is changing faster than it has in decades.
Utilities are facing increasing demand from electrification, data centers, and economic growth while also integrating new technologies such as battery storage, electric vehicles, and distributed energy resources. At Sparkfund, we're helping utilities solve these challenges through innovative programs that unlock flexible energy capacity and modernize how the grid is planned, operated, and optimized.
We're looking for a Senior Engineer, Systems Engineering to help shape the technical foundation of this transformation.
This is an opportunity to work at the intersection of utility operations, distributed energy resources, grid modernization, and emerging energy markets. You'll partner directly with utility engineering, planning, operations, and regulatory teams to evaluate opportunities, design integration strategies, and support the deployment of distributed energy solutions at scale.
If you're excited about solving complex technical problems, influencing the future of utility infrastructure, and working on projects that have real-world impact, we'd love to talk.
Sparkfund partners with utilities and large energy consumers to develop and deploy Distributed Capacity Procurement (DCP) programs—an innovative approach to meeting grid needs through distributed energy resources rather than traditional infrastructure investments alone.
Our work helps utilities improve grid reliability, increase flexibility, accelerate electrification, and create value for customers while supporting the transition to a more resilient and sustainable energy future.
We are a remote-first company with team members across the United States and hub offices in Denver, Minneapolis, and Washington, D.C.
As a Senior Engineer, Systems Engineering, you'll serve as a key technical contributor supporting the design and implementation of distributed energy programs across multiple utility partners and markets.
You'll:
Evaluate utility distribution systems and grid planning processes to identify opportunities for distributed energy deployment
Work directly with utility engineering, planning, and operations teams to assess grid needs and integration requirements
Support the technical design and deployment of distributed energy resources, including battery energy storage systems (BESS), EV charging infrastructure, and other emerging technologies
Develop communications, controls, and operational technology (OT) integration strategies that enable grid-connected assets to participate in utility and market programs
Analyze utility systems, grid constraints, hosting capacity, and operational requirements
Support interconnection planning and distributed energy integration efforts
Translate complex technical requirements into actionable recommendations for internal and external stakeholders
Collaborate with Commercialization, Program Management, and Project Delivery teams to bring innovative energy solutions from concept to deployment
Help utilities navigate one of the most significant shifts in the history of the electric power industry.
Gain exposure to multiple utility partners, regulatory environments, market structures, and distributed energy technologies.
Your work won't sit on a shelf. You'll help design and implement programs that influence how energy resources are deployed and operated on the grid.
This role combines deep technical problem-solving with business, operational, and market considerations.
Work alongside utility executives, engineers, regulators, technology providers, and energy market participants who are helping define the future of energy infrastructure.
We're interested in engineers who are energized by complex systems, emerging technologies, and solving practical challenges at scale.
You may be a strong fit if you have:
5+ years of experience in electrical engineering, power systems engineering, utility engineering, distribution planning, or distributed energy systems
Experience working with electric utilities, energy developers, engineering consulting firms, grid operators, or related organizations
Familiarity with distributed energy technologies such as battery storage, solar, EV charging, microgrids, or grid modernization technologies
Experience evaluating technical requirements, engineering tradeoffs, and system integration challenges
Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
A passion for innovation, problem-solving, and improving how the grid operates
Preferred experience includes:
Distribution planning or interconnection engineering
Operational technology systems (DERMS, ADMS, SCADA, DMS/OMS)
Energy storage systems and grid integration
Wholesale energy markets and DER participation models
Utility communications protocols and controls architecture
This is a remote-first position and may be based anywhere within the United States. Occasional travel may be required for team gatherings, utility partner meetings, and industry events.
The anticipated base salary range for this position is $119,000 - $142,000, depending on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other business considerations.
Sparkfund offers a competitive benefits package including:
Medical, dental, and vision coverage
401(k) with company match
Flexible vacation policy
Paid parental leave
Remote-first work environment
Monthly phone and internet stipend
Strong commitment to work-life balance
The future of the electric grid will require new ideas, new technologies, and new ways of thinking. If you're excited about helping utilities solve complex challenges and accelerating the energy transition, we'd love to hear from you.
