Job Role: Senior Draftsman

Compensation range: $1,500 - $2,500 AUD  Monthly

Engagement type: Independent Contractor Agreement

Work Schedule: This role is expected to align with the AU business hours (approx. 9:00AM - 6:00 PM, Monday to Friday) for collaboration, but as a contractor, you’ll have flexibility in how you manage your time.

Our client is a leading Australian steel fabrication company with over 30 years of experience delivering industrial, mining, infrastructure, and commercial projects. They specialize in structural steel fabrication, CNC steel processing, plate rolling, pipework, refurbishment, grit blasting, painting, and custom fabrication solutions for large-scale industrial applications. The company is known for its commitment to quality, innovation, reliability, and solving complex fabrication challenges.

Role Overview:

We are seeking an experienced Senior Draftsman to lead the preparation, coordination, and management of detailed fabrication and shop drawings for structural steel and industrial projects. This role plays a critical part in ensuring projects move efficiently from engineering design through fabrication and installation.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in structural steel detailing, advanced proficiency in industry-standard drafting software, and the ability to collaborate closely with engineers, project managers, workshop teams, and clients to deliver accurate and fabrication-ready documentation.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare detailed shop drawings, fabrication drawings, assembly drawings, and GA (General Arrangement) drawings for structural steel projects.
• Interpret engineering and architectural drawings, specifications, and design documents.
• Develop accurate 3D models and steel detailing packages using industry-standard software.
• Produce BOMs (Bills of Materials), cutting lists, and material take-offs.
• Coordinate with engineers, project managers, estimators, and fabrication teams to resolve design and constructability issues.
• Review drawings for compliance with Australian Standards and project specifications.
• Manage revisions, RFIs, and drawing updates throughout the project lifecycle.
• Ensure documentation supports efficient fabrication, installation, and project delivery.
• Conduct quality checks on drafting outputs before release.
• Assist in identifying opportunities to improve detailing accuracy, fabrication efficiency, and workflow processes.
• Mentor junior draftsmen and provide technical guidance where required.
• Liaise with Australian stakeholders regarding drawing approvals, technical clarifications, and project requirements.

Requirements

• 6-8+ years of experience in structural steel detailing or drafting  in mining, industrial, infrastructure, or heavy fabrication projects.
• Strong experience producing fabrication and shop drawings for structural steel projects.
• Have you had any experience using Autodesk inventor?
• Are you able to provided samples of some previous work done, including: pipework / platework / structural?
• Proficient in architectural drafting software (e.g., AutoCAD, ArchiCADRevit, BIMx); TEKLA Structures must be your primary drafting software (non negotiable)
• Strong understanding of:
• Structural steel fabrication processes
• Welding and connection detailing
• Plate work, pipework, and industrial steel structures
• Material take-offs and BOM generation
• Ability to read and interpret engineering and construction drawings. Should have a solid experience with point cloud 3D scanning technology and the ability to produce accurate models directly from scan data
• Experience working with Australian construction or fabrication standards.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to drawing accuracy.
• Excellent communication and coordination skills.

• Familiarity with CNC-driven fabrication workflows and steel processing environments.
• Familiarity with fabrication workshops and site installation teams.
• Degree or background in Drafting, Engineering, Structural design, Architecture, or a related discipline.
