This position will have a strong focus on civil design and will support a diverse range of environmental and water-related projects, including site grading and drainage, stormwater management and treatment, industrial site improvements, conveyance and pumping systems, infiltration and low-impact development (LID) BMPs, and other site and water infrastructure projects. Much of the work will support projects in California, with periodic travel to project sites as needed. The successful candidate will work closely with GSI’s engineers and scientists to develop practical solutions to complex environmental and engineering challenges. We are looking for an experienced civil engineer who can lead and review design work, manage projects, mentor junior staff, and contribute to the continued growth of GSI’s civil design capabilities. The position offers the opportunity to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams in GSI’s technical, team-oriented environment. The position offers flexibility for remote work, but candidates should be located near one of GSI’s offices in Irvine, Folsom, Emeryville, or Missoula. Responsibilities: Lead and support civil design projects, including site grading and drainage, stormwater management and treatment, conveyance and pumping systems, infiltration and low-impact development (LID) BMPs, and other site and water infrastructure. Prepare and review engineering calculations, design drawings, specifications, cost estimates, and construction documents. Provide technical review and QA/QC of civil design work prepared by junior engineers and designers. Manage project scope, schedule, budget, technical approach, and coordination with clients and project teams. Collaborate with engineers, scientists, and CAD staff to develop practical and constructible design solutions. Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior staff. Support permitting and coordination with regulatory agencies and other project stakeholders. Provide engineering support during construction, including submittal review, RFIs, site observations, and design modifications. Participate in client meetings, proposal development, and other activities supporting project and practice growth. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree or higher in Civil Engineering or a related engineering field. At least 10 years of relevant civil engineering experience. Professional Engineer (PE) license in California, or ability to obtain California licensure. Experience with site civil and water-related design, including grading, drainage, stormwater infrastructure, pumping systems, and related site and water infrastructure. Experience preparing and reviewing engineering calculations, plans, specifications, and construction documents. Experience managing projects and/or design tasks. Familiarity with California stormwater regulations and permitting preferred, but not required. Experience with AutoCAD and Civil 3D is required. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Excellent organizational, verbal, and written communication skills. Valid driver’s license and clear driving record.
