Senior Backend Engineer — MCP Infrastructure

Project Brief

We're building out a Model Context Protocol (MCP) infrastructure for a mid-market US software company that's moving fast into agentic AI. This isn't a support role or a ticket queue. The person in this seat sits directly alongside a lead on the project and owns the backend implementation of MCP server components from day one. 

The existing product runs on Java, SQL Server, and Angular. MCP is the new layer being built on top. Your job is to design and ship the server-side components that make tool-use, function calling, and agent orchestration work reliably at production scale. You'll work in a tight, senior team where your decisions have immediate visibility and real consequences.

Must-Haves

• 5+ years of hands-on Java development with Spring Boot and WebFlux — not framework familiarity, but deep OOP fundamentals and the ability to architect complex systems from the ground up
• Experience integrating on-premises systems with cloud-hosted services — the core architecture requires bridging existing on-prem infrastructure to a cloud-deployed agent layer
• Production experience integrating LLM tooling: MCP protocol, function calling, or tool orchestration patterns in a live environment
• Strong system design instincts — you can design, document, and defend an architecture before writing a line of code
• SQL Server at scale — schema design, query optimization, data modeling for high-throughput systems 
• Comfortable working alongside a client-side senior engineer as a peer, not under supervision
• Near-native English — daily async and sync communication directly with a US-based technical lead and client stakeholders

Nice to Have

• Familiarity with the MCP protocol spec or experience implementing MCP servers/clients
• Angular exposure — the frontend isn't your primary responsibility, but understanding the full stack helps
• Experience integrating agentic or LLM-backed workflows into an existing Java application
• Prior work in environments where you were the primary backend owner with no senior Java peer to lean on

• Build and ship MCP server components
• Design the backend architecture for tool-use and agent orchestration layers integrated into an existing Java/SQL Server stack
• Own the implementation quality — not just writing code, but defining patterns the team can follow
• Collaborate daily with the existing AI Engineer as MCP and agent workstreams intersect
• Contribute to technical decisions with your own perspective — this is a peer relationship, not a directive one

• 💵 $4000 - 5000/month — paid in USD, bi-weekly via Deel 
• 🕐 US Eastern Time hours (EST) — Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM–6:00 PM EST
