Energy Transition Overview

As major drivers of energy demand, Japan and the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region as a whole play a critical role in determining whether the world can achieve global climate goals, making strong regional engagement essential. EDF’s work in Japan currently focuses on two main priorities: (1) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from oil and gas production and use by 2030, while meeting the world’s energy needs cleanly and equitably and (2) to safeguard the ocean, protect nature and create more secure livelihoods by ensuring climate resilient fisheries. We draw on strong science and economics and innovative partnerships with policymakers, industry and investors to reform policies, regulations, and practices to achieve durable solutions.

The goal of EDF’s Energy Transition team is to bend the curve on global greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel production and use by 2030, cleanly and equitably. We will achieve this through a defined set of strategies targeted at 1) reducing emissions from fossil fuel production, delivery, and use, and 2) reducing demand for fossil fuels in power generation, transportation, buildings, and industry. To achieve this goal, we seek reforms in law, regulation, and/or business practice through a mix of strategic corporate partnerships, direct engagement with policymakers, and mobilizing investor and public sentiment in favor of change. In formulating and achieving our strategies, we will work in close collaboration with EDF regions, draw on cutting-edge science and rigorous economic and financial analysis, and develop durable solutions.

Overall Function

The Senior Analyst, Global Methane Research & Analytics will conduct more complex data analysis and literature reviews, maintain models and databases, and develop reports and other means of disseminating findings and information in support of Energy Transition’s and EDF’s goals of reducing methane emissions. This position works with international institutions, many of which are in Asia-Pacific and Europe, and this critical work supports imperative organizational energy transition work by researching and analyzing emissions from the oil and gas industry and providing data that is utilized to advocate at the regional, country and international levels for stringent oil and gas regulation.
