POSITION SUMMARY

School nursing practice requires the combination of professional clinical nursing practice with a specialized component that promotes the health, well-being, social-emotional learning, and academic success of the school-age child in the least restrictive environment. The Hawaii Keiki (HK) Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner works within a School-Based Health Clinic and is called upon to work closely in collaboration with HK personnel - Registered Nurses (RNs), Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs), School Health Support Staff (SHSS), Behavioral Health Technicians (BHTs), Administration, and others; Hawaii Department of Education (HI DOE) school personnel - School Health Aides (SHAs), Teachers, Educational Assistants (EAs), Para-professional Tutors (PPTs), Administration, Office Staff, and others; and HI DOE School-Based Behavioral Health (SBBH) personnel - Behavioral Health Specialists (BHSs), School Counselors, Clinical and School Psychologists, Social Workers (SWs), and others to carry out a wide range of school health activities designed to address student’s psychiatric-mental health/behavioral health needs. The person in this position is responsible for establishing a leadership role, training, clinically advising, and providing consultation and support to HK, School, and SBBH personnel, as well as developing and providing services to students with psychiatric-mental health/behavioral health challenges and refer them to school or community mental health/behavioral health services. 

Meeting of the employee’s professional responsibility will be in line with the duties described below and in coordination with the Employee’s supervisor. It is expected that the Employee will meet their professional responsibilities to the school site and program which may include attendance at scheduled meetings during non-student days. This position is not tied to the school year and will involve both telehealth and program requirements when DOE schools are closed.

This position works Full-Time, 40 hours/week remotely via telehealth with occasional in-person site visits and training required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • A Master’s degree in Nursing with specialty training as a Child-Adolescent OR Family OR Across the Lifespan Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) OR Clinical Nurse
  • Specialist (CNS) from a school accredited by a recognized accrediting program. 
  • Current, unencumbered APRN-Rx license in the state of Hawaii. 
  • Current Board Certification as a Child-Adolescent OR Family OR Across the Lifespan PMHNP OR PMHCNS from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or other nationally recognized board certification center; OR have obtained active Board Certification in one of these areas by the start date if selected. 
  • Current BLS for Healthcare Provider certification. 
  • Experience with the use of electronic health records and reporting.
  • Experience as a Child-Adolescent OR Family OR Across-the-lifespan PMHNP-BC, APRN-Rx or PMHCNS-BC, APRN-Rx; OR clinical experience within a PMHNP program and additional experience with children/adolescents as an FNP or DNP.  
  • Advanced computer skills and experience with operating telehealth platforms and documenting in electronic health record systems. 
  • Knowledge of HIPAA rules, regulations, and compliance.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations for blood-borne pathogens.
