The University of Otago’s Centre for Rural Health aims to improve healthcare and health outcomes for rural and remote communities in New Zealand and the wider South Pacific through teaching and research excellence based on the principles of social accountability and community engagement.

We teach undergraduate medical students and have an active postgraduate programme which offers postgraduate certificate and diploma, research master's, and PhD opportunities.

The role/Te mahi

We are seeking to appoint a Paper Convener (Senior Professional Practice Fellow) within the Centre for Rural Health post-graduate team. This position provides the opportunity to work within a team that is committed to improving health outcomes for all through high quality research and teaching. Appointment will be dependent on academic achievement, skills, and experience.

Responsibilities will include:
•    Contributing to the on-going development, delivery and success of the Rural Health Programmes through the provision of duties relating to Research, Teaching, Community and University Service, and associated Administration.

You may be already teaching and researching in rural health and looking for an opportunity to share your knowledge and experience with great students wanting to upskill to provide the best outcomes in rural medical settings!

There is flexibility to undertake the work from anywhere in NZ, combining it with rural clinical work.

Skills and experience/Kā pūkeka me kā wheako

This role would best suit those who have completed the Postgraduate Diploma of Rural Clinical Practice (or equivalent) and are currently working (or have recent prior experience) in a senior medical position in rural New Zealand.

The ideal candidate for this position would:
•    Be medically qualified and hold relevant postgraduate qualifications.
•    Hold vocational registration in rural hospital medicine and/or general practice or the equivalent.
•    Be actively engaged with or have significant experience in rural generalist medicine.
•    Have teaching experience at the postgraduate level.
•    Have appropriate postdoctoral or research experience, and the ability to establish a vigorous research program or show a commitment to developing this expertise and experience.
•    Be proficient in digital technologies, particularly the use of videoconferencing software and have access to your own computer (e.g. laptop or device).

This is a part-time (0.1 FTE) fixed-term position available for one year. The role does not require physical location at a university campus.

Appointment will be at the appropriate step dependent on academic achievement, skills and experience. The salary scale for a Senior Professional Practice Fellow is $148,414 to $184,993 (medical & dental scale pro-rata per annum).
