AI Summary

Manage the end-to-end healthcare claims workflow including ingestion, eligibility, and settlement. Translate operational patterns into product specifications and use AI agents to automate workflows and improve system efficiency.

Founding Operations Associate

Run the claims workflow that moves billions of dollars. Write the specs. Ship with AI at your side.
Location: San Francisco or Remote | Full Time

Why This Exists

A federal arbitration system called Independent Dispute Resolution, or IDR, now determines billions of dollars in healthcare payments each year. Providers win the vast majority of disputes, yet most eligible claims are never filed. The process is manual, fragmented, and resource-intensive, and most providers don't have the infrastructure to pursue what they're owed.

The No Surprises Act created the framework, and the market already exists. Today it runs on spreadsheets, consultants, and static playbooks. We're building the first intelligent system designed to operate inside it.

Operations is where that system meets reality. Every claim moves through a workflow that spans ingestion, eligibility, evidence packaging, submission, and settlement. This role sits on the ground floor of that workflow, running claims day-to-day and shaping the product with every pattern you spot.

Why This Is Hard (and Interesting)

You will not inherit a mature process. You will help build it.

Claims data is messy. Payers adapt. Deadlines cascade. Audit trails matter. You'll develop strong instincts for where money gets left on the table and where the system needs a better guardrail. The work rewards people who like puzzles and care about getting the details right.

What's new is that many of the workflows you run will increasingly be operated by AI agents, not offshore teams. That changes the shape of the job. You won't just execute; you'll write the specs, steer the agents, and decide when a human needs to step in. If you've been watching AI reshape knowledge work and want to be the person putting it into practice on something high-stakes, this is a rare seat.

Who We Are
Recourse is being built in partnership with 25M Health, a healthtech venture firm. We have institutional backing, a shared platform team spanning engineering, strategy, design, and back-office, and early access to large provider systems.

We are actively working with health system design partners and have access to $400M+ in billable claims to inform product development from day one. This is a funded, validated opportunity with real customers and real data.

We are small. We move quickly. We value clarity over theater. We want this to be the best work of your career. The stretch you look back on as the one where you shipped real things, with people who raised your game, on something that mattered.

We care about clear thinking, high ownership, intellectual honesty, and direct communication. We believe operations, product, and engineering should operate as one pod, not three functions. We want the machines to do machine work, and the humans to do their best work. The person in this role helps make that real every single day.

The Role
As Founding Operations Associate, you will run the day-to-day claims workflow and turn what you learn into better product. You will:
  • Operate the end-to-end claim workflow: ingestion, eligibility checks, evidence packaging, submission, settlement tracking
  • Spot patterns in real claims and translate them into specs, checklists, and prompts that improve the system
  • Work directly with AI tools (Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, agentic frameworks) to automate your own work and move features forward
  • Partner with the Head of Operations and engineering team to ship product, not just flag issues
  • Build and maintain dashboards and SOPs that treat AI as a first-class team member
  • Own quality and throughput metrics for the claims you run, and raise the bar over time
  • Represent the operations perspective in product reviews, customer conversations, and design sessions

This is not a ticket-queue role. You will write code-adjacent artifacts (specs, SQL queries, workflow diagrams, AI prompts) and you will ship. You'll learn the domain deeply, and you'll shape how the company actually works.

Who You Are
You are AI-pilled. You have used AI tools to do work that would have taken a team, and you have opinions about which ones are useful and which are hype. You stay current because the world is changing and you want to see the next shift before anyone else.

You have strong analytical instincts. You're the person who can walk into a messy spreadsheet, figure out what's going on, and build something cleaner. You like puzzles. You follow the thread until you understand it.

You have a bias to action. You don't default to no. Speed of iteration over polish of iteration. You start, you learn, you fix things in motion. Most decisions are reversible and do not need extensive study.

You have technical fluency. You're comfortable working with data, querying systems directly, and getting hands on to move work forward rather than waiting for someone else. You do not need to be a senior engineer. You do need to pick up new tools quickly and collaborate with engineers without needing hand-holding.

You are intellectually honest and curious. You ask questions when you don't understand something. You say so when you're wrong. You use plain language. You respectfully challenge decisions you disagree with, and once a decision is made, you commit.

You care about the craft. You notice when something is slightly off. You close the loop. You leave the process better than you found it.

You put the team first. You are reliable and fully invested. You take your vacations. You check on your teammates. You help build a culture where people do their best work because they are supported, not squeezed.

What You Bring
  • 2+ years in a role that rewards analytical rigor and operational ownership: ops, consulting, investment banking, revenue cycle, data analytics, or a similarly structured early career
  • Hands-on fluency with AI tooling (Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, or similar). You have used it to ship or accelerate real work
  • Comfort with data and analytical tools (SQL, Excel, Python, or equivalent). You can pull answers yourself rather than filing a request
  • Clear written communication. You can turn messy inputs into a crisp spec, checklist, or summary
  • A preference for small teams and early-stage chaos over mature org charts
  • Healthcare revenue cycle, claims operations, or exposure to the No Surprises Act is a strong plus. Not required — we'll teach the domain to the right person
  • Experience writing product specs, user stories, or equivalent artifacts that can be built against is a plus
  • Sound judgment, operational depth, and ownership mindset are required. Grit matters more than pedigree.

Why This Role
This is a chance to be early at a company defining the operating layer of healthcare payments. You will run a real workflow, ship real product, and work with AI as a true collaborator, not a toy. You will learn faster here than you would in three years at a bigger company.

If you want this to be the most memorable stretch of your early career, where you shipped something real, with a team you respected, in a domain that actually matters, this is the seat. We would like to talk.

Compensation
Base salary range: $120,000 to $150,000, with meaningful equity. Specific offers are calibrated to experience, location, and scope of the role. We also cover standard health, dental, and vision benefits, and expect our team to take real vacation time.

Equal Opportunity
Recourse is an equal opportunity employer. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law. We believe the best teams are built from people with different backgrounds and perspectives, and we're committed to creating an environment where everyone can do their best work.
