Overview

MRMS — Multi-Radar Multi-Sensor — is one of the National Weather Service's core operational products for precipitation estimation, and it's built on code that never stops improving. As FWI's MRMS Hydromet Development Advisor supporting NSSL, you will apply specialized technical expertise to guide the ongoing optimization of the MRMS Hydromet/QPE (quantitative precipitation estimation) codebase in support of the upcoming VCP-Agnostic version of MRMS — gathering facts, analyzing existing code and data, and developing recommendations and strategies for the development team. If you like advising on production C++ strategy for a system that operational forecasters rely on every day, this is your kind of project.

 

Work Schedule and Location:

 

Remote: This full-time remote position will work Monday through Friday, 8 AM CST to 5 PM CST.

Responsibilities

  • Apply specialized technical knowledge to analyze the existing MRMS Hydromet/QPE codebase and develop recommendations and strategies for the planned VCP-Agnostic version of MRMS
  • Advise on and, where appropriate, modify existing C++ code or contribute new code to support the ongoing optimization of the MRMS Hydromet/QPE processing software suite
  • Provide expert technical guidance to project staff on software design, coding approach, and technical risk for MRMS development activities
  • Provide technical documentation (e.g., schematics, code repositories, test reports) for development activities
  • Prepare quarterly reports of status

Qualifications

Required: 

  • BA/BS in a technical or business discipline
  • 4+ years of professional and/or academic experience

Desired: 

  • Software programming skills (C++ required, Perl, Python, and Bash preferred)
  • Software development experience (Git)
  • Demonstrated ability to advise technical teams on software architecture, coding strategy, and development risk
  • Communication skills, including technical writing
  • Ability to work as part of a technical team
  • Familiarity with meteorological datasets, including output from weather radar systems (preferred)

Work Setting and Environment:

  • Primary location: Remote
  • Normal work hours are Monday through Friday, 8 hours per day / 40 hours per week, excluding federal holidays; field data-collection activities may require irregular hours during active severe weather events
  • Local and non-local travel may be required, not anticipated to exceed 5% annually; all unplanned travel must be approved in writing by the COR at least 10 calendar days in advance
  • Must complete an online IT security awareness course within one week of starting work
  • Foreign national candidates are subject to export control review and require CO/COR approval prior to consideration
  • Government-furnished equipment provided, including access to HPC resources, specialized mobile observation platforms, laboratory test equipment, computers, and office workspace, as applicable

Pay Range

$81,000.00 to $85,000.00
