Backend Engineer (Platform / Infra) — High-Growth Gaming Startup - Mid to Senior Level Role
Location: Remote (US-based, must be available for 9:30am ET standup)
Compensation: $145,000–$160,000 base + equity
Experience Level: 5+ years professional experience required
About the Company
Our client is a fast-growing, venture-backed gaming startup operating at the intersection of real-money gaming and the creator economy. With a core product already in market and generating significant revenue, they're expanding their engineering team to meet demand and build out the next generation of features.
This is a high-stakes, high-impact opportunity to work on a social casino product used by thousands of players around the clock. The founding team is composed of seasoned entrepreneurs and engineers with backgrounds in crypto, gaming, and consumer tech — and they’re backed by top-tier investors.
The Role
This is not your average backend engineering role. You’ll join a small, elite team building infrastructure that must perform at scale and handle real-money transactions with zero room for error. The ideal candidate is a pragmatic builder who enjoys solving hard backend problems, thrives in high-trust environments, and wants to own critical parts of a fast-moving system.
You’ll work across a variety of areas — from scaling APIs and architecting new features to integrating gaming vendors and optimizing database performance. No red tape, just great engineering and high-impact work.
What You’ll Do
- Design and build backend services, APIs, and integrations with third-party vendors.
- Tackle high-throughput challenges related to concurrency, state, and scale.
- Collaborate with frontend engineers and DevOps to deliver end-to-end product features.
- Write performant, raw SQL queries (no ORMs used here) and reason deeply about data models.
- Help shape the technical direction of the product and infrastructure.
- Participate in code reviews and architecture discussions.
- Work remotely with autonomy — only one required daily meeting (9:30am ET standup).
What We’re Looking For
- 5+ years of backend engineering experience.
- Proficiency in any modern backend language (e.g., TypeScript, Go, Java, Python, Rust).
- Solid experience with SQL and relational databases — you should be comfortable writing raw queries and understanding database internals.
- Familiarity with cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred) and fundamentals of networking, caching, and scaling systems under heavy load.
- Strong grasp of API design, web protocols (HTTP, REST), and common web security standards (JWT, cookies, etc.).
- Git/GitHub fluency and confidence working in a terminal-based dev environment.
- Self-starter mindset — you don’t need handholding to make progress.
Bonus Points For
- Experience with: TypeScript, Postgres, Redis, AWS, Kubernetes.
- Background in real-money gaming, gambling, or crypto (especially at product-focused companies like Coinbase, Kraken, etc.).
- Degree in Computer Science, Math, or a related field — or equivalent experience backed by strong signals (e.g. brand-name startups, standout technical interviews).
Why This Role Is Exciting
- Remote-first and flexible. The team cares about outcomes, not hours — as long as you're present for the one required meeting each day.
- Greenfield opportunities. There’s room to shape architecture, tooling, and process from the ground up.
- Top-tier backers + market traction. The company is operating in one of the most profitable industries on earth — and they’re already live with real users and revenue.
- Founding-team quality. You’ll work with some of the most capable operators in the space, all with prior startup successes under their belts.
Interview Process
- Step 1: 45-minute technical deep-dive with the hiring manager.
- Step 2: Paired coding session via CoderPad.
- Step 3: 30-minute call with leadership.
- That’s it. No take-homes, no hoops.
Note: This role is only open to candidates based in the U.S. at this time. Sponsorship is not available. Must be available for standup at 9:30 AM EST.
