Develop and revise 2D drawings, 3D parametric models, and associated documentation while ensuring compliance with engineering standards. Coordinate with engineers to clarify requirements and resolve technical comments to maintain drawing and model integrity.

Seeking an experienced Designer with expertise in precision mechanical design to provide support to our client in Idaho Falls, ID.

Application Deadline: Monday, 10/12/26, 11 am PST.

Requirements:

The Contractor will assess engineering requirements and translates into technical blueprints, drawings, layouts, and simulation models using CAD/CAM/CAE software or applying standard CAD/CAM/CAE techniques to digitize, edit, and revise engineering drawings of components, parts, and assemblies. Customize CAD/CAM/CAE software to model complex or unusual designs.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and revise 2D drawings, 3D parametric models, assemblies, and associated documentation from approved engineering inputs.
  • Create complete, unambiguous drawings that define geometry, interfaces, materials, finishes, processes, tolerances, inspection requirements, quantities, and assembly relationships needed for fabrication and installation.
  • Select and apply functional datum reference frames, feature control frames, material condition modifiers, basic dimensions, and general tolerances in accordance with ASME Y14.5-2009.
  • Evaluate tolerance accumulation and fit at part and assembly interfaces; identify conditions that could prevent fabrication, inspection, assembly, interchangeability, or intended operation.
  • Apply good parametric modeling practices, including stable design intent, fully constrained sketches, appropriate feature order, controlled references, reusable geometry, and clean assembly structure.
  • Check drawings and models for fit, form, function, completeness, consistency, manufacturability, inspectability, and compliance with applicable drafting and engineering standards.
  • Verify parts lists, item balloons, quantities, drawing references, zone locations, next-assembly information, notes, weld symbols, revision identifiers, and change markings across the full drawing package.
  • Maintain drawing, model, and reference-file integrity through established document control, revision control, configuration management, and records processes.
  • Resolve technical comments from engineers, independent checkers, fabricators, inspectors, and formal document change reviews, while preserving an auditable disposition of changes.
  • Coordinate with engineers and other disciplines to clarify requirements, document assumptions, identify missing inputs, and recommend practical drawing or modeling solutions.
  • Plan assigned work against negotiated priorities and dates; provide credible progress updates and raise scope, resource, or schedule concerns before commitments are missed.
  • Support backlog reduction with a constructive, service-oriented approach and mentor drafting personnel in modeling, detailing, checking, and GD&T application when requested.
  • Other duties as assigned by the BEA Technical Point of Contact.

Work Hours: The client operates on a 4x10 schedule, consisting of four 10-hour days, Monday through Thursday (approx. 7:00 AM–5:30 PM MST).

Remote Work: The candidate will work remotely, with the ability to come onsite as needed. The primary onsite location is the Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC) at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL).

To support payroll, tax, and employment compliance requirements, candidates must reside in one of the following approved locations: Arizona, California, Texas, Aiken, SC, Columbia, SC, Greenville, SC, Idaho Falls, ID, or Pittsburgh, PA. Unfortunately, we are unable to consider applicants located outside of these approved locations at this time.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience using Creo software.
  • Must have overall specialization in precision mechanical.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply ASME Y14.5-2009 to real parts and assemblies, including datum systems, position, profile, orientation, runout, form controls, composite controls, projected tolerance zones, virtual condition, and bonus tolerance.
  • Ability to explain why a GD&T scheme protects function and how the requirement can be manufactured and verified; ability to identify overconstrained, underdefined, conflicting, or noninspectable requirements.
  • Advanced skill with PTC Creo and Windchill Data Management Software or comparable parametric 3D CAD software and Data Manager (PDM or Vault) and working knowledge of AutoCAD. Creo proficiency is required for immediate contribution.
  • Strong command of drawing layout, orthographic projection, section and detail views, dimensioning, tolerancing, weld symbols, parts lists, item ballooning, and revision practices.
  • Ability to interpret engineering calculations, specifications, vendor data, design inputs, and redlines and convert them into controlled drawing content without changing engineering intent.
  • Experience performing independent drawing checks and documenting clear, technically defensible comments.
  • Working knowledge of materials, fabrication processes, machining, welding, inspection methods, assembly practices, and how these constraints affect drawing requirements.
  • Ability to use logic and structured problem solving to compare alternatives, recognize risk, and resolve discrepancies across models, drawings, bills of material, and source documents.
  • Clear written and verbal communication, including the ability to ask focused questions, explain technical decisions, accept review feedback, and work effectively with personnel of varied experience levels.
  • US Citizenship is required to perform this contract.

Education: Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited institution and 5 years of relevant experience; OR 10 years of relevant experience with no degree.
