SierTeK Ltd. is seeking a Mathematician to support an opportunity remotely, with preference to Wright Patterson AFB, OH.
Position Overview Section
The Mathematician supports the U.S. Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine (USAFSAM), Aerospace Medicine Studies and Analysis Division (FES), by developing advanced mathematical, statistical, and analytical models that improve force health protection, operational readiness, and human performance. This position analyzes complex health, personnel, operational, and deployment-related data to support epidemiological research, program evaluation, predictive analytics, and evidence-based decision-making across the U.S. Air Force.
Essential Job Functions
Mathematical Modeling & Data Analysis
Design, formulate, and conduct mathematical and statistical analyses of health surveillance, medical, personnel, operational, and deployment-related datasets supporting Air Force research and readiness initiatives.
Develop innovative analytical methodologies to solve complex operational and public health challenges.
Perform quantitative analyses supporting program evaluation related to human performance, operational readiness, force health protection, and organizational effectiveness.
Develop, test, and refine mathematical and statistical models that examine relationships between variables and operational outcomes.
Conduct model verification, validation, and performance assessments, implementing corrective actions when necessary.
Data Management & Integration
Retrieve, integrate, and manage health information, personnel, deployment, operational, and surveillance data from multiple military data repositories.
Collect and organize data from approved government databases in accordance with established data-sharing agreements.
Develop comprehensive data dictionaries, metadata documentation, and data mapping specifications.
Design data storage architecture and establish relationships among disparate datasets.
Document programming code and analytical methodologies in accordance with USAFSAM programming standards and industry best practices.
Statistical Programming & Computational Analysis
Develop analytical datasets and perform statistical analyses using:
SAS
SAS Enterprise Guide
Mathematical and statistical programming languages such as Python, R, MATLAB, Maple, or Visual Basic.
Apply advanced quantitative methods, including longitudinal analysis, predictive modeling, regression analysis, simulation modeling, and decision analysis.
Learn and utilize emerging analytical platforms, including Tableau, SAS Viya, Qualtrics, and Envision, to enhance analytical capabilities.
Scientific Communication
Prepare technical reports, white papers, presentations, and briefing materials summarizing analytical methods and study findings.
Present research results through technical briefings, scientific conferences, and peer-reviewed publications.
Assist in preparing conference posters, presentations, and manuscripts supporting dissemination of research products.
Support knowledge transfer by documenting analytical processes and briefing government personnel on study methodologies and results.
Collaboration & Program Support
Serve as a mathematical and statistical subject matter expert on multidisciplinary research teams.
Collaborate with epidemiologists, statisticians, data scientists, clinicians, and government stakeholders to support operational research and public health initiatives.
Interface regularly with USAFSAM/FES leadership and technical staff.
Obtain and maintain required permissions for access to military health, personnel, and operational databases.
Develop familiarity with Air Force medical, personnel, operational systems, and associated data repositories.
QualificationsMinimum Position Requirements
Master's degree in:
Applied Mathematics
Statistics
Data Science
Operations Research
Or a closely related quantitative discipline approved by USAFSAM/FES.
Minimum three (3) years of professional experience applying mathematical or statistical methods in a research, healthcare, military, or analytical environment.
Proficiency in at least two of the following programming or analytical languages:
Python
R
MATLAB
Maple
Visual Basic
Or another approved mathematical programming language.
Experience with logical operations, set theory, and advanced quantitative analysis.
Strong analytical skills in mathematical modeling, statistical modeling, and longitudinal data analysis.
Experience validating and verifying statistical and mathematical models.
Ability to learn emerging analytical technologies, including Tableau, SAS Enterprise Guide, SAS Viya, Qualtrics, and Envision.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
Excellent organizational, analytical, and project management skills.
Ability to obtain required database access permissions.
Ability to complete HIPAA training.
Ability to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA).
Highly Desired Qualifications
Experience developing stochastic, deterministic, or simulation-based mathematical models.
Experience programming with SAS and SAS Enterprise Guide.
Experience with:

Monte Carlo simulations
Sensitivity analysis
Tornado charts
Strategy tables
Conditional probability models
Decision analysis techniques
Experience applying data science methods within healthcare, operational research, or military environments.
Five (5) or more years of experience in healthcare analytics or data science.
One (1) or more years of experience applying mathematical modeling or decision analysis in a military or Department of Defense environment.
Experience supporting force health protection, operational readiness, or human performance research.
