  • Ongoing, Legal Officer Grade IV ($148,380 - $151,236) opportunity, location is flexible.

 

About the Role 
As the Legal Adviser, you will provide high-level legal advice, support and research across complex areas of law to contribute to the efficient and effective delivery of legal services. Working within the Aboriginal Land Rights team, you will support sound decision-making by interpreting and applying relevant legislation, policy, guidelines and practice standards to complex matters. The role will also involve preparing clear and practical legal advice, undertaking detailed legal research, and providing guidance to administrative staff to help ensure accurate, consistent and relevant compliance advice is delivered to the land rights network.

You will join the Office of the Registrar, in the Aboriginal Land Rights Act (ORALRA) branch. Further details on Aboriginal Land Rights can be found here.

We're Looking For 

  • High-level legal advice: Provide expert legal advice to ORALRA in line with legislation, policy, guidelines and practice standards on complex matters affecting the Aboriginal land rights network. 

  • ALRA interpretation and compliance: Interpret and apply the Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1983 to support the efficient operation of Local Aboriginal Land Councils, including advice on criminal record checks, disqualifications, and compliance obligations for board members and staff.

  • Misconduct and integrity matters: Support the investigation of alleged misconduct by board members and staff of Aboriginal Land Councils under Part 10 of the ALRA, and manage referrals of public interest disclosures from the NSW Ombudsman and ICAC consistent with legislative frameworks.

  •  Legal documents and research: Interpret, analyse and prepare complex legal documents including legal records, correspondence, legislation, policies, reports, submissions and briefing notes, while undertaking legal and administrative research and allocated case work within established standards and delegations.

  •  Legal practice improvement: Provide high-level advice and recommendations on legal standards, practices, strategies, systems, procedures and processes, and brief and manage external experts, including lawyers and parliamentary counsel, to ensure advice meets the needs of the Registrar.
