About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Intermediate II Software Analyst Documentation Specialist to lead the comprehensive documentation of a complex, database-driven application used across federal stakeholders. This system is built on SQL-based data architecture and supported by legacy and modern technologies including .NET, ASP, jQuery, and jQuery UI.

This role will focus on producing a complete, accurate, and industry standards–compliant documentation package that reflects the current state of the system. The work will involve analyzing database structures, system workflows, and application behavior; reconciling and incorporating existing documentation; and clearly identifying current functionality versus outdated or deprecated components.

The documentation produced will serve as the authoritative foundation for system modernization, security posture assessment, and regulatory compliance efforts. The selected candidate will work closely with a designated System Subject Matter Expert (SME) to validate findings and ensure completeness and accuracy.

This position has the option of remote, hybrid or in-person work with an initial intensive documentation phase requiring delivery of a full documentation package within 6 months, followed by a reduced level of ongoing support for documentation maintenance and updates.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant professional experience
  • Eligibility to obtain a Public Trust clearance
  • Valid Real ID, or the ability to obtain one prior to employment
  • US citizen and reside in the United States without sponsorship
  • Demonstrated experience documenting complex, database-driven systems
  • Strong proficiency with SQL and relational database concepts (schemas, data models, data relationships, normalization)
  • Experience analyzing systems utilizing more than 1 framework
  • Proven ability to reverse-engineer systems and produce accurate documentation from incomplete, outdated, or inconsistent sources
  • Experience consolidating and reconciling multiple documentation sources into a single authoritative set
  • Strong understanding of industry documentation standards, and security and compliance documentation practices (e.g., IEEE, ISO/IEC/IEEE 42010, NIST, FISMA, or similar frameworks)
  • Ability to clearly distinguish and document current-state vs. legacy or deprecated functionality
  • Excellent written communication skills with a high level of precision and attention to detail
  • Experience collaborating with technical SMEs, developers, DBAs, and stakeholders to validate system understanding
  • Ability to independently manage work, meet deadlines, and deliver a comprehensive documentation package within a defined timeframe

Ideal Candidate Would Have:

  • Experience working with federal government systems or regulated environments
  • Prior involvement in system modernization, migration, or re-engineering initiatives
  • Experience documenting credentialing, identity management, or access control systems
  • Familiarity with compliance frameworks such as NIST 800-53, FedRAMP, or FISMA
  • Experience supporting security audits or accreditation processes
  • Strong background in data governance, data lineage, and data dictionary development
  • Proficiency with documentation and modeling tools (e.g., Visio, Lucidchart, ER modeling tools, Confluence, SharePoint)
  • Experience documenting APIs, integrations, and system interfaces
  • Ability to structure documentation for both technical and non-technical audiences
  • A highly methodical, detail-oriented approach with a focus on accuracy, traceability, and usability
