AI Summary

Build and scale the global legal function, serving as a strategic partner to the leadership team. Oversee commercial contracting, corporate governance, employment law, and data privacy/AI regulation.
Atticus is seeking its first Head of Legal to build, own, and scale the legal function across our global operations. This is a critical leadership role for an ambitious problem-solver who perceives legal as a strategic enabler of commercial success

You will be instrumental in navigating the complex legal landscape of a fast-growing, cross-jurisdictional B2B SaaS company, particularly one operating in the legal and regulated industries space.

About us:

We're an Australian HQ’d scale-up with offices in London and Melbourne. Our company makes leading document verification technology for law firms, listed companies, and funds. The software helps customers verify critical documents before market disclosure, saving pain in high-pressure, high-stakes work.

We’re a growing, global company. We’re trusted by 90% of Australian corporate law firms, over 50% of the UK Top 30 law firms, over 50% of the ASX50 and 40% of the ASX100. We have serious traction, with significant untapped potential. You can learn more about us at atticus.tech

About the role:

You will be a key commercial partner to the leadership team, owning all legal matters across four core pillars:

1. Commercial & contracting
  • Lead customer and supplier contract negotiation, drafting, and management globally.
  • Be the subject matter expert for all IT/technology contracting, licensing, and procurement.
  • Structure and execute commercial agreements that accelerate sales and partnership objectives.
  • Engage, instruct and manage outside counsel.
2. Corporate & governance
  • Manage group entity governance, formation, and compliance (entity management).
  • Oversee the company's intellectual property (IP) strategy, registration, and enforcement.
  • Manage global insurance policies and claims.
3. Employment & people
  • Draft and manage employment contracts and ensure HR compliance across jurisdictions.
  • Advise on employment law matters and company policies.
  • Administer and manage the employee share option plan (ESOP) and Enterprise Management Incentive (EMI) scheme.
4. Data, privacy & AI regulation
  • Ensure compliance with global data protection and privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR).
  • Proactively advise on the rapidly evolving regulatory landscape for Artificial Intelligence (AI regulation) as it relates to our product development and deployment.

About you:

You are a commercially focused and pragmatic lawyer with substantial experience, ideally in a fast-growth technology or SaaS environment.

Essential Qualities:
  1. Problem solving: You are comfortable working in ambiguity and finding creative, commercially viable solutions to complex legal and business challenges, not simply applying "black letter" law.
  2. Tech fluency: You are adept at building a modern, tech-enabled legal function. You understand how tools like contract lifecycle management, workflow automation, and AI-assisted review can scale legal support efficiently, and you're comfortable selecting and implementing the right systems.
  3. Strategic enablement: You fundamentally perceive your role as enabling business growth and speed, viewing risk as something to be managed and mitigated, not something to be avoided at all costs.
  4. Commercial acumen: You possess a strong commercial focus, understanding the company's business model, sales drivers, and growth objectives.
  5. Cross-jurisdictional experience: You ideally have demonstrable experience working across multiple legal jurisdictions (e.g., UK, Australia, US), managing foreign counsel where necessary.
  6. Experience: 7+ years of relevant legal experience, with time spent in-house, ideally at a B2B SaaS scale-up.
  7. Qualification: AU qualified solicitor/barrister
Benefits
  • Salary of $220,000 + depending on capability and experience
  • 100% remote-friendly from within Australia (come to the office, work from home or a bit of both—it’s up to you)
  • Flexible work hours (we value output over hours)
  • $2,000 home office setup budget
  • Five weeks leave each year (and never work on your birthday)
  • 16 weeks paid parental leave
  • Generous professional development program
