AI Summary

The role focuses on advancing FLI's pro-human AI portfolio by building coalitions and managing stakeholder relationships across various sectors. Responsibilities include coordinating workstreams, tracking deliverables, and supporting communications for public-facing events.

The Future of Life Institute (FLI) is hiring for our Futures team. The Futures team works to envision, architect and build momentum for aspirational futures for humanity with AI. This role will focus on advancing and scaling FLI's pro-human AI portfolio. This is a role for someone who can build trust across diverse stakeholders, keep complex initiatives on track, and translate ideas into momentum. The Futures team member will report directly to the Director of our Futures Program.

The Futures Program is guided by the principles of the Pro-Human AI Declaration. Humanity stands at a fork in the road with AI. One path races to replace humans as creators, caregivers, decision-makers, and workers—threatening our economy, security, civil liberties, democracy, and the human experiences of family, faith, and community. But a Better Path exists: trustworthy, controllable AI tools that amplify human capability, strengthen institutions, and help us solve problems we cannot solve alone. The Futures Program is building the foundation to get us there, through three reinforcing tracks:

  • Articulating the principles of the declaration — human control, distributed power, protection of the human experience, individual agency, and developer accountability.

  • Building the coalition — uniting a remarkably broad alliance from policymakers to faith leaders to scientists.

  • Showcasing real-world Tool AI — highlighting what rigorous, pro-human thinking achieves on humanity's hardest problems (e.g., AI vs Cancer).

Who we are

FLI educates and engages lawmakers, key stakeholders, and the general public about transformative technologies and their implications. We advocate for policies and approaches that mitigate catastrophic risks while advancing positive futures for humanity.

As a member of the Futures team, you will:

  • Coalition building and stakeholder engagement

    • Help cultivate and deepen relationships with partners across sectors, broadening the coalition without diluting its substance.

  • Program operations and execution

    • Coordinate across workstreams, track deliverables, and keep multi-stakeholder projects moving on realistic timelines.

    • Support the scoping and launch of new domain initiatives and/or grantmaking.

    • Help plan and run convenings, briefings, and workshops.

  • Communications support

    • Coordinate with FLI's communications team to support launches, media moments, and public-facing events.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build trusting partnerships, regardless of political affiliation.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex information to non-expert audiences.

  • Thrive in a remote work environment. You are self-directed, manage your own time and energy well, and can value translation of your work into real output.

Preferred qualifications, skills and qualities:
  • Experience launching or scaling initiatives, coalitions, or movements, all the way from conception to implementation to growth.

  • Experience in issue advocacy or campaigning.

  • Prior work at the intersection of science/technology and policy, or prior direct work building new technologies.

About the Future of Life Institute

Founded in 2014, FLI is an independent non-profit working to steer transformative technology towards benefitting life and away from extreme large-scale risks. Our work includes grantmaking, educational outreach, and policy engagement.

Our work has been featured widely, including in The Washington Post, Politico, Vox, Forbes, The Guardian, the BBC, The Economist and Wired.

Some of our achievements include:

  • Superintelligence Statement, an open letter calling for a prohibition on the development of superintelligent AI until there is strong public buy-in and scientific consensus that it can be developed safely and controllably. The letter has been signed by more than 130,000 people, including Yoshua Bengio, Geoffrey Hinton, Steve Wozniak, Richard Branson, Steve Bannon, Prince Harry and Susan Rice.

  • The Asilomar AI Principles, one of the earliest and most influential sets of AI governance principles.

  • The Pro-Human AI Declaration, a document with five guidelines on how AI development must be centred on humanity first, created during a meeting of bipartisan civil society groups spanning faith, labor, and think tanks.

  • Testimony to the US Senate AI Insight Forum on Innovation, and the first civil society presentation to the US House of Representatives Taskforce on AI, encouraging policies that mitigate catastrophic risks from AI.

  • AI Safety Index - an objective rating of AI companies on key safety and security domains, as judged by experts in the field.

FLI is a largely virtual organization, with a team of approximately 40 distributed internationally, mostly in Europe and the US. We have four offices: Campbell in California, Brussels in Belgium, London in the UK, and Washington DC. We meet in person as a full team twice a year.
