Positions Supervised: Manager, Learning Design, Specialist, Instructional Technology

Job Summary

The Director provides strategic leadership for online learning design, instructional technology, and the quality of Lindenwood digital learning experience for faculty, staff, and students.  The position oversees the learning design and technology team—including instructional designers and instructional technology specialists—while serving as a primary partner to faculty and adjuncts as they build, revise, and continuously improve online courses and program.  The Director works collaboratively within the Learning Academy with the Director of Employee Development and the Director of Educational Development, ensuring coherence across faculty support, professional learning, and instructional innovation. This role defines and advances the University’s online learning strategy, champions evidence-based design, and cultivates a culture of quality, partnership, and continuous improvement.

Job Responsibilities and Execution

  • Ensures all department Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are created, regularly updated, and consistently used in onboarding and training to support accuracy, quality, and operational consistency.
  • Collaborates with academic colleges and academic leadership to establish and maintain course and program design standards, instruments, and review processes.
  • Collaborates with the Learning Academy to design and deliver integrated development initiatives that connect instructional innovation, employee growth, and performance practices, reinforcing a unified approach to culture, capability building, and continuous improvement.
  • Leads the design, development, and quality assurance of online courses and programs at Lindenwood, applying evidence-based instructional design principles and national quality standards.
  • Oversees the design, configuration, and ongoing improvement of the Canvas LMS environment, including , accessibility compliance, and student-facing course templates.
  • Collaborates with IT for the technical configuration of third-party external tool and LTI integrations.
  • Guides the development of AI-enhanced multimedia content for instructional use.
  • Leverages LMS data and UI/UX principles to continually improve online student engagement and learning outcomes.
  • Leads user testing, troubleshooting, and documentation for course templates and student experience workflows.
  • Stays current with emerging technologies, digital pedagogy trends, and compliance requirements.

Leadership and Strategic Thinking

  • Serves as a thought leader for learning design, educational technology, and online pedagogy—informing institutional projects, plans, training initiatives, and ongoing relevant professional development for faculty and staff.
  • Works in close partnership with the Director of Educational Development and the Director of Employee Development to ensure coordinated, high-impact support for teaching and learning across the institution.
  • Collaborates with University offices and personnel to assess the relevance and success of online courses and programs.
  • Assesses opportunities and formulates strategies for leveraging technology to transform teaching and learning, staying current of higher education trends, new tools, and instructional strategies.

Employee Management and Development

  • Supports the mission of the University and serves as an ambassador of the Q2 culture of service excellence
  • Sets clear performance expectations and holds employees accountable.
  • Ensures that the learning design team has appropriate opportunities to stay current of best practices, tools, and resources for learning design in higher education.
  • Recruits, interviews, hires, supervises and evaluates employees in compliance with Lindenwood standards and procedures.
  • Conducts annual employee evaluations based on evidence, observation, and feedback.

Job may require other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications – An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered. Additional requirements may be designated by position.

  • Bachelor's degree in instructional technology, computer science, multimedia design, or related field (Master’s preferred).
  • 7+ years of experience in instructional technology or online learning, preferably in higher education.
  • Deep expertise in Canvas LMS administration, including integrations and LTI tool deployment.
  • Experience designing and implementing UI/UX solutions for online learners.
  • Demonstrated expertise in AI-based content tools and scalable multimedia creation.
  • Strong project management and leadership skills with experience overseeing cross-functional teams.
  • Knowledge of accessibility standards (WCAG), copyright regulations, and FERPA compliance.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
