Job Description: Data Migration Engineer (Alteryx)

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Data Migration Engineer (Alteryx) to support enterprise modernization and migration initiatives. The successful candidate will be responsible for assessing legacy data estates, analyzing existing Alteryx workflows, extracting embedded business logic, and translating complex legacy processes into migration-ready specifications.

This role requires a strong background in Alteryx, ETL processes, SQL, data architecture, and legacy system transformation. The ideal candidate will have experience reverse-engineering business logic and collaborating with stakeholders to ensure successful migration to modern data platforms.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive inventory and assessment of legacy systems, applications, and data assets.
• Analyze existing database schemas, tables, views, stored procedures, functions, and data models.
• Identify and document ETL jobs, workflows, reports, dashboards, and downstream system consumers.
• Create detailed dependency maps and data lineage documentation.
• Assess technical debt, risks, and migration complexities.

Alteryx Workflow Analysis

• Review and parse Alteryx workflows to identify embedded business logic and transformation rules.
• Extract calculations, filters, joins, data quality checks, aggregations, and workflow dependencies.
• Document workflow structures and operational processes.
• Analyze data movement patterns and integration points across systems.
• Prepare business logic documentation for migration and modernization activities.

Data Migration & Modernization Support

• Develop migration specifications, mapping documents, and transformation requirements.
• Support migration of legacy ETL processes to target platforms.
• Validate extracted business logic with technical and business stakeholders.
• Assist in defining future-state architecture and migration strategies.
• Collaborate with data architects, engineers, analysts, and business users throughout project delivery.

Documentation & Governance

• Produce detailed technical documentation and migration artifacts.
• Maintain inventory of data assets, workflows, and dependencies.
• Ensure compliance with data governance and documentation standards.
• Provide recommendations for optimization and modernization opportunities.

Must-Have Skills

Alteryx

• Strong hands-on experience with Alteryx Designer.
• Ability to analyze, troubleshoot, and document complex Alteryx workflows.
• Experience extracting and documenting business rules from Alteryx processes.

SQL & Databases

• Advanced SQL development and query optimization skills.
• Strong understanding of database schemas, relational databases, and data models.
• Experience with stored procedures, functions, views, triggers, and database objects.

ETL & Data Engineering

• Extensive experience with ETL/ELT processes and data integration.
• Knowledge of data transformation, cleansing, validation, and reconciliation techniques.
• Experience performing data lineage and impact assessments.

Legacy Migration

• Hands-on experience with legacy modernization or migration projects.
• Ability to reverse engineer applications and business processes.
• Strong understanding of migration methodologies and best practices.

Documentation & Analysis

• Experience creating:
  • Data mappings
  • Functional specifications
  • Technical documentation
  • Migration runbooks
  • Process flows
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.

Good-to-Have Skills

• Python scripting for workflow analysis, automation, and data transformation.
• Experience with cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud.
• Knowledge of Snowflake, Databricks, Synapse Analytics, or Redshift.
• Familiarity with SSIS, Informatica, Talend, DataStage, or similar ETL tools.
• Experience with metadata management and data catalog tools.
• Understanding of Data Governance and Master Data Management (MDM).
• Exposure to enterprise architecture frameworks.
• Agile/Scrum project delivery experience.
• Business Analysis or Solution Architecture background.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Engineering, or a related field.
• 5+ years of experience in Data Engineering, ETL Development, Data Migration, or Analytics Engineering.
• Proven experience working on enterprise-scale migration and modernization initiatives.
• Experience working with cross-functional teams in global environments.
