What is the role?
This role serves as the senior technical expert for Westerra's Symitar core banking platform. The Senior Software Engineer architects, develops, maintains, and optimizes Symitar solutions that support the credit union's core business operations. This individual designs and develops software programs, reports, integrations, automation, and custom solutions while ensuring the stability, security, and performance of the Symitar environment.
This role partners closely with business leaders, operations, digital banking, lending, accounting, and technology teams to improve business processes, automate manual work, resolve complex operational issues, and maximize the value of Westerra's investment in the Symitar platform.
What will be expected of me?
- Serve as the technical expert for the Symitar core banking platform, including program development, processing support, and Symitar architecture.
- Design, develop, test, implement, and support custom Symitar solutions that improve operational efficiency and member experience.
- Partner with business owners to understand operational challenges and identify opportunities for automation, process improvement, and enhanced system capabilities.
- Analyze complex business and technical requirements and translate them into scalable Symitar solutions.
- Develop and maintain programs, batch jobs, reports, letter files, custom screens, and automation processes.
- Design and maintain integrations between Symitar and third-party systems using SymXchange, batch processing, APIs, and other integration technologies.
- Diagnose and resolve complex production issues involving processing, performance, interfaces, and system functionality.
- Lead technical troubleshooting efforts across multiple departments and vendors.
- Ensure system changes are properly documented, tested, promoted, and supported throughout the software development lifecycle.
- Develop technical standards, coding practices, and documentation for Symitar development.
- Recommend new capabilities, enhancements, and best practices that improve Westerra's use of the Symitar platform.
- Participate in system upgrades, software releases, and vendor implementations.
- Mentor junior developers and provide technical leadership across development initiatives.
- Participate in DevOps processes including source control, testing, deployment, and change management.
- Maintain appropriate security, compliance, and audit controls within all development activities.

- 8+ years of Symitar development experience supporting a financial institution.

- Episys/Symitar database structure
- Experience integrating Symitar with digital banking, payment systems, lending platforms, imaging, CRM, and other third-party applications.
- Experience supporting Symitar software upgrades, releases, and system implementations.
- Experience with SQL, scripting, APIs, web services, and file-based integrations preferred.
- Experience with source control, software lifecycle management, testing, and deployment processes.
- Experience working directly with Jack Henry support and third-party technology vendors.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or related field preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills and Abilities:
- Expert knowledge of Symitar architecture, data structures, processing, and development tools.
- Strong understanding of core banking operations including deposits, loans, payments, member services, accounting, and operational processing.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze complex business problems and design scalable technical solutions.
- Ability to identify opportunities to improve efficiency through automation and process redesign.
- Strong troubleshooting and root-cause analysis skills across complex system interactions.
- Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Experience gathering business requirements, estimating effort, designing solutions, and delivering projects.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining high quality and attention to detail.
- Strong documentation and technical writing skills.
- Maintains a high level of confidentiality with member and organizational information.
- Accountable for managing complex technical initiatives with minimal direction.
- Routinely exercises independent judgment on significant technical and business issues.
- Serves as a subject matter expert for Symitar development and architecture.
- Influences technology direction by recommending best practices, architectural improvements, and long-term platform enhancements.
- Builds collaborative relationships across departments and effectively partners with business leaders, vendors, and technology teams.

Salary: In addition to the starting rate of $113,564 to $144,794, this role is also eligible for Westerra’s self-funding reward plan. This plan pays out a cash incentive annually if the company hits specific criteria tied to our financial goals and you will have a direct impact on the outcome of those results!
