As a Coding Specialist 3 supporting Neurosurgery Professional Billing, you will play a critical role in ensuring the integrity of complex clinical documentation and coding for one of healthcare’s most specialized service lines.
This fully remote opportunity is ideal for an experienced coding professional with advanced Neurosurgery expertise who enjoys complex case review, problem-solving, and maintaining the highest standards of coding quality. You'll work independently while partnering with providers and colleagues to support compliant, accurate reimbursement and operational excellence across a nationally recognized health system.
The Role
As a Coding Specialist 3, you will serve as a subject matter expert in professional fee coding for Neurosurgery, applying advanced coding knowledge to highly complex surgical, procedural, and Evaluation & Management services. This role requires a strong understanding of clinical documentation, regulatory requirements, and payer expectations, with a focus on quality, accuracy, and compliance.
In a typical day, you will:
Independently review, code, validate, and audit complex Neurosurgery surgical procedures, office-based procedures, inpatient encounters, and E/M services
Analyze provider documentation to ensure complete and compliant code assignment utilizing CPT, ICD-10-CM, modifier usage, and payer-specific guidelines
Apply advanced knowledge of Neurosurgery operative services, diagnostic procedures, therapeutic interventions, and associated E/M services
Evaluate diagnosis specificity, laterality, anatomical detail, medical necessity requirements, and documentation sufficiency
Review and resolve coding edits, charge review issues, and work queue assignments utilizing Epic and EncoderPro
Interpret and apply National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI) edits, global surgical package rules, LCD/NCD guidance, and payer billing requirements
Identify documentation gaps, coding vulnerabilities, and compliance risks while determining when provider clarification or compliant queries are appropriate
Support coding quality initiatives through research, education, and application of evolving coding and reimbursement guidance
Collaborate with providers, revenue cycle professionals, and coding colleagues to promote accurate reimbursement and regulatory compliance

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education: High School Diploma or GED
Experience: 5+ years of relevant coding experience required.
Licensure: Certified Professional Coder (CPC) required.

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally requires traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
