CARB-X is seeking a dynamic, mission driven Assistant Director of External Affairs to join our dedicated team. This is a unique opportunity to help expand the impact of the world's leading public private partnership accelerating the early-stage development of much-needed innovations to prevent, diagnose and treat life threatening bacterial infections. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR), the process by which bacteria and other microbes become resistant to the medicines designed to kill them, is widely recognized as one of the most urgent global health and development threats of our time.

 

As a key member of the External Affairs team, your main objectives will be to:

  1.  raise funds to ensure the long-term sustainability of CARB-X and
  2. Strengthen our collaborations with funders and key stakeholders to address the antibacterial pipeline and access crisis.

 

Essential responsibilities will include:

Resource mobilization:

  • Manage day-to-day relationships with current and prospective funders.
  • Coordinate internally to ensure that funder expectations are understood and integrated across CARB-X teams.
  • Work closely with Boston University's Sponsored Programs and other internal teams to draft funding proposals and negotiate grant agreements.
  • Map funder priorities, funding cycles, and decision-making processes to inform engagement planning and proposal timing.
  • Use internal and external data to show CARB-Xs impact and strengthen the case for additional funding in the early stages of AMR product development.
  • Provide strategic advice to colleagues across CARB-X on funder engagement and external positioning Engagement with policymakers and key stakeholders.
  • Manage day-to-day relationships with policymakers and key stakeholders.
  • Customize engagement tactics for each partner.
  • Ensure regular documentation and internal sharing of insights from stakeholder interactions to inform future engagement strategies.
  • Collaborate with other teams to provide CARB-Xs technical expertise to policymakers and relevant partners.
  • Support efforts to strengthen CARB-Xs convening role within the AMR and global health space Research and opportunity identification.
  • Keep abreast of policy developments in AMR and global health R&D.
  • Analyze news, reports and studies to identify and share emerging trends.
  • Engage in forward-thinking analysis to anticipate shifts in the AMR and global health landscape.
  • Deliver stakeholder mapping and power analysis, identifying influence, interests, and alignment with CARB-X goals.
  • Refine CARB-Xs narrative based on these policy developments and emerging trends.

 

External Representation:

  • Support preparation of speaking notes, background briefs, and key messages for senior leadership ahead of external engagements. 
  • Act as a representative of CARB-X at global health forums and conferences.
  • Participate in roundtables and events with funders and policymakers, advocating for the organizations mission.
  • Coordinate with external organizations about crucial narratives and messages.

 

The ideal candidate will bring:

  • Experience in fundraising, resource mobilization and partner engagement in science, global health, public health, biomedical innovation, or related fields.
  • Strong familiarity with the global health funding ecosystem, especially in areas related to R&D and antimicrobial resistance.
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to translate complex scientific and strategic topics into clear, compelling narratives.
  • A proactive, analytical mindset and the confidence to engage with senior leaders, global funders, and policymakers.
  • This position, which reports to one of CARB-Xs Directors of External Affairs, is fully remote, offering flexibility and autonomy. Candidates must be able to collaborate effectively across Eastern Time (ET) and Central European Time (CET) working hours but are not expected to mirror a different time-zone. Periodic international travel will be required for meetings, conferences, and partner engagements.
