Art History Teacher

Position Summary

We are seeking an engaging, enthusiastic, and empathetic Art History Instructor to design and deliver dynamic educational programs for our adult learning community both in person and remotely. This position focuses on lifelong learning, intellectual enrichment, and community building through the study of visual arts. The ideal candidate will blend deep subject matter expertise with a warm, accessible presentation style that honors the diverse life experiences of older adults, fostering creative expression and deep discussion.

Core Responsibilities

• Curriculum Design: Develop and implement engaging, multi-week lecture series with audio visual covering various art historical movements, artists, cultures, and mediums suitable for beginner and advanced students.
• Instructional Delivery: Deliver highly visual, narrative-driven presentation slides and lectures that encourage active group discussion, critical thinking, and the sharing of personal perspectives or memories related to the art.
• Accessibility & Accommodations: Adapt teaching materials, pacing, and visual aids to accommodate varying audio-visual needs (e.g., using high-contrast slides, large fonts, clear vocal projection, and assistive audio tech if needed).
• Community Engagement: Foster a warm, inclusive, and socially supportive classroom environment where participants feel comfortable asking questions and connecting with peers.
• Special Event Coordination: Program enrichment opportunities, such as guided virtual gallery tours or local museum outings, ensuring full accessibility and coordination with community transit.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Subject Expertise: Strong knowledge of global art history, visual culture, and museum studies.
• Senior-Centric Pedagogy: Understanding of the unique psychological and social benefits of creative arts and lifelong learning of mature students.
• Communication & Technology: Exceptional public speaking and people skills. Proficiency remote learning.

Education and Experience

• Education: Bachelor’s or master’s degree in art history, Fine Arts, Museum Studies, or a closely related humanities field preferred.
• Experience: Minimum of 2 years of teaching or museum docent experience. Direct experience working with older adults, senior communities, or community-based adult education programs is highly preferred.
