Seeking an experienced Applied Mechanics Engineer to provide support for a novel advanced reactor design project in Idaho Falls, ID.

Requirements:   

The Contractor will apply engineering principles to analysis, modeling, and simulation of structural and mechanical systems for a novel advanced nuclear reactor project. 

  • Perform linear and nonlinear, static and dynamic analysis of such factors as stress, force, vibration, and material plasticity. 

  • Compare results to the provisions of governing codes, standards, and orders. 

  • Perform dynamic seismic analysis of structures, systems, and components, including soil-structure interaction analyses.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities: 

  • Demonstrated ability to work with a multi-disciplinary team of scientists and engineers on a novel advanced reactor design.

  • Proven experience performing thermomechanical analysis for reactor internals including high temperature graphite and other exotic materials.

  • Proven experience performing analysis using ASME BPVC. Preferred experience with Section III Division 5.

  • Proven experience performing seismic evaluations using ASCE 7.

  • Develop physics-based mathematical models of mechanical, chemical, or electrical systems to support and verify design.

  • Provide support to design teams in development of alternatives analysis, equipment selection and sizing, vendor equipment summaries and evaluations, specifications, drawings, supporting analysis and calculations, and engineering design files.

  • Perform structural mechanics designs including evaluations/analyses of the behavior of structures, systems and components under normal operating conditions, natural phenomena hazards, and accident conditions in support of operating advanced nuclear reactors. Provide support to Safety Analysis through simulation of postulated accidents and their structural/mechanical consequences.

  • Document the design (controlled and approved models, drawings, specifications, design descriptions) to establish conformance with design requirements and applicable codes and standards. Document analyses in accordance with approved engineering process requirements.

  • Have expertise in ASME, ASCE, and other mechanical and structural codes and their relationship to DOE requirements for various safety class systems.

  • Perform calculations and develop models to investigate nonlinear behavior of nuclear facilities and systems to seismic ground motion and advanced nonlinear site response analysis technics

  • Work effectively both in isolation and as a member of a team. Provide input in a constructive manner to others while maintaining a positive and professional relationship with all, even while under pressure and tight deadlines.

  • Assist in the organization’s business planning and development efforts. Serve as advisor to management in area of technical expertise. May act as spokesperson to customer in area of expertise.

  • Supply leadership, peer review, checking, and consultation to fellow engineers. Serve as primary author on professional technical reports and presentations.

  • Other duties as assigned by the Lead Reactor Project Engineer.

 

Qualifications: 

Required

  • Knowledge in the field of structural dynamics and seismic analysis. This includes linear and nonlinear seismic soil structure interaction analysis, site response analysis, and development of advanced seismic probabilistic risk assessment (SPRA’s) methods.

  • Knowledge of nuclear systems and advanced reactors including ASME BPVC Section III Division 5.

  • Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.

  • Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various goods and services.

  • Ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense.

  • Ability to combine pieces of information to form general rules or conclusions (includes finding a relationship among seemingly unrelated events).

  • Ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.

  • Ability to communicate information and ideas in speaking so others will understand.

  • Ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong. It does not involve solving the problem, only recognizing that there is a problem.

Education: Requires degree from an ABET accredited program.

  • Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering or a directly related field, with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience; or 

  • Master of Science degree in mechanical engineering or a directly related field, with a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience. 

NOTE: 

  • US Citizenship is required to perform this contract.  

  • The candidate may work remotely but must be available to travel to the Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC) as required.
