Why Choose to volunteer with Red Cross?

  • You can help improve lives and create a positive impact in your community,
  • It is an opportunity to enhance your skills and knowledge and gain new experiences, and
  • You will be helping Red Cross to support older and vulnerable people across Australia through a range of volunteer-based programs.

The programs

Telecross & Telecross Redi - Supporting wellbeing and safety through connection

Telecross and Telecross Redi are vital Red Cross services designed to support vulnerable Australians—particularly older individuals, those living alone, or people with health challenges—by providing daily wellbeing checks through friendly phone calls.

Telecross: Everyday Connection and Care

Operating 365 days a year, Telecross offers a reassuring daily call from a trained volunteer to check on a person’s health, emotional wellbeing, and plans for the day. These calls help detect early signs of illness, injury, or distress—such as falls or unreported health issues—and trigger immediate follow-up if a call goes unanswered. This consistent routine fosters independence and peace of mind, helping people feel cared for while remaining safely in their own homes.

Telecross Redi: Emergency Support During Extreme Events

Telecross Redi activates during declared emergencies like heatwaves or other extreme weather events. It provides proactive daily calls to individuals at heightened risk—such as those with chronic conditions, disabilities, or recovering from illness. These calls are more than a check-in; they are a critical lifeline that can prevent health crises, reduce pressure on emergency services, and save lives.

Together, these programs offer a compassionate service that strengthens community resilience, reduces demand on emergency services, and ensures vulnerable people stay safe, informed, and connected—every day and especially in times of crisis.

The opportunity

We are looking for warm, dependable volunteers who possess strong conversational skills and the ability to relate to and empathise with a diverse range of older individuals, including those from various cultural backgrounds and life experiences.

Key Requirements & Your Commitment:

  • Be willing to join a nationwide team delivering social inclusion program within Aged and Community Care.
  • Possess excellent conversational skills, with the ability to listen actively and quickly build trust and rapport.
  • Engage in conversation and activities that are appropriate to the client or group.
  • Ability to make up to 20 brief calls per hour, always following our call guidelines and escalation procedures.
  • Respect the privacy, rights, and dignity of clients and maintain confidentiality with respect to information obtained during the delivery of service
  • Utilise appropriate digital systems and follow established guidelines for call handling and record-keeping.
  • Maintain clear professional relationships and respect clear boundaries to safeguard the well-being of the client and yourself.
  • Participate in mandatory learning and development to keep your knowledge, skills, and practices up-to-date in the aged and community care sector.
  • Commit to upholding the principles outlined in the Aged Care Code of Conduct and any subsequent updates.
  • Demonstrate cultural sensitivity by respecting diverse backgrounds and ensuring that all interactions are inclusive and free from discrimination.

Red Cross will ensure you have training, ongoing support and access to other opportunities within the world’s largest humanitarian network.

The impact

By volunteering with Telecross & Telecross Redi, you become a vital lifeline—offering connection, reassurance, and safety to vulnerable Australians. As part of a 50year legacy that saves a life each week on average, your daily calls help prevent health crisis, ease demand on emergency services, and bring peace of mind to clients, carers, and families.

In return, you’ll gain the deep fulfillment of making a real difference every day, the joy of knowing your voice can brighten someone’s morning (and yours), and the sense of belonging to a compassionate, nationwide community committed to care, connection and resilience.

Application requirements:

  • All volunteers will be required to undertake a National Police Check, which will be organised through Red Cross.
  • Statutory Declaration to be completed if you have been a citizen or permanent resident of a country other than Australia after turning 16 years of age.
