JOB DESCRIPTION 

Job Title:  Advocacy & Campaigns Manager

Location:  Nairobi, Kenya

Reports to:  Africa Director

Job Summary

Crisis Action is looking for an Advocacy and Campaigns Manager to join its Africa Office and forge creative coalitions to de-escalate conflict and protect civilians in Sudan. This role will ensure Crisis Action can seize opportunities to influence public attitudes and decision making while developing and sustaining key relationships and partnerships. The position will require periodic travel across the continent, as well as regular virtual engagement with partners and allies. 

The post-holder will be an outstanding strategist that can also deliver results; an outcome-focused, self-motivated individual who leads with rigor, takes initiative, and can project manage with skill. This person must be capable of convening and coordinating within a complex ecosystem of civil society partners and allies across the globe.

Principal responsibilities

• Design and implement campaigns and advocacy on the Sudan conflict: Work with others in the Crisis Action team, civil society partners and allies to develop and drive collective campaigns and impactful advocacy to protect civilians and halt armed conflict. This will involve spotting opportunities, crafting strategies, developing creative tactics and working with partners to implement multiple advocacy actions.   
• Political analysis and engagement: Provide sophisticated insight and analysis on the position of key African governments and regional organisations towards the conflict in Sudan, and top-quality advice to our international team and partners to assist in the development of first-class campaign strategies and tactics.  
• Networking and relationship building: Expand the organization's regional relationships that have a bearing on our work, across policy and decision makers, the media, influencers, partners and other stakeholders. 
• Convening and facilitation: As conflicts or crises emerge or escalate in Sudan, its neighboring countries or the Horn of Africa you will draw on your skills to rapidly convene and facilitate global conversations for our network to share knowledge and insight and bolster and coordinate their collective capacity to influence key international decision-makers and spaces. 
• External communications: Produce high-quality external communications to engage a variety of audiences. 
• Promote and uphold Crisis Action’s culture of low ego, servant leadership, and collaborative working. 

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Essential Skills & Experience

• Exceptional understanding of campaigns and advocacy strategy development and implementation in any relevant field (e.g. human rights, humanitarian, peacebuilding, gender, conflict, or otherwise). 

• A political operator who can build and sustain relationships with senior officials and political figures, capable of winning trust and respect. 

• Excellent analytical skills and the ability to think and work strategically, with rigor and at pace. 

• Knowledge of the Sudan conflict within the Horn of Africa region, and a deep understanding of its relation to Gulf dynamics and interests. 

• Experience convening and building coalitions, and capable of working with and motivating colleagues and partners across teams, organizations, geographies, and time zones. 

• Strong facilitation skills, a confident facilitator of multidisciplinary project groups. 

• Outstanding interpersonal, communications and relationship building skills, and a proven track record as an adept network builder. 

• A multi-tasker with a proven track record of effective project management, coordination and delivery, and the ability to prioritize, manage and deliver across competing priorities. 

• An understanding of global and regional civil society and related power dynamics, sensitivities and tensions. 

• Knowledge of the international human rights, humanitarian and/or peacebuilding NGO sector(s). 

• Fluency in written and spoken English, excellent written communication skills for diverse purposes and audiences. 

• Proficient in using a range of digital communication and collaboration technologies to support effective teamwork, stakeholder engagement and information sharing. 

• 5-7 years of professional experience in relevant fields.

Desirable 

• Fluency in written and spoken French to contribute to the organisation's broader language capability. 
• A regional network of civil society actors and allies engaged in deescalating the conflict and/or or protecting civilians in Sudan.

Salary & Benefits 

Salary: We have set bands for the salary range for all positions at Crisis Action. The baseline of our salary range for this position is USD50,000 per annum. 

Benefits: 25 annual leave days (30 days after 3 years). Up to 6% contribution to pension. 3-month long service leave after 6 years and one-month sabbatical leave in year 10. CA additionally offers an annual inflationary increase, and 2% salary increase in year 2, 4 and 8 subject to availability of funds.
