Public School Workplace Injury Triage

About the Role

The Triage Nurse (RN) is one of four nurses dedicated to the triaging of public‑school workplace injuries through a dedicated phone line. This role is multifaceted, blending clinical assessment with administrative precision, and plays a critical role in ensuring injured employees receive timely, appropriate medical direction.

The primary function of the Triage Nurse is to provide professional clinical assessment and guidance to injured workers, followed by accurate, thorough, and efficient documentation in accordance with established protocols and regulatory requirements.

Role and Responsibilities

Core responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

• Receive incoming calls from employer or employee for the purpose of reporting a worker’s compensation injury.
• Obtain description of event pertaining to the potential injury.
• Ascertain previous injury, medical conditions or medication that may indirectly affect clinical baseline evaluation.
• Assessment of type of injury, severity of injury and determine if emergent or urgent, determine if specialist required, and direct accordingly Schedule initial clinical evaluation (coordinate transportation if required) and inform worker.
• Educate worker regarding authorization, pharmacy form, and work status documentation and contacting case manager after initial clinical evaluation, and to return to work following initial evaluation with all relevant documentation from physician.
• Send escalation documentation to case management team as per protocol.
• Participate in on-call after hours triage rotation.
• Assist with additional triage related assignments as needed.

What We Are Looking For

• Active Registered Nurse (RN) license with strong clinical assessment and triage experience
• Proven ability to make sound, timely clinical decisions in a fast-paced, phone-based environment
• MUST HAVE Experience with workers’ compensation
• Occupational health or injury triage experience preferred
• Strong critical thinking skills with the ability to assess injury severity and determine appropriate level of care
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to guide and educate injured employees clearly and professionally
• High attention to detail with accurate and thorough documentation skills
• Ability to follow established protocols while exercising clinical judgment when needed
• Comfortable coordinating care logistics, including scheduling evaluations and arranging transportation
• Strong organizational and multitasking abilities in a high-volume call environment
• Collaborative mindset with the ability to work cross-functionally with case management and client teams
• Proficiency with electronic medical records (EMR) and documentation systems
• Flexibility to participate in an on-call rotation and support after-hours triage needs
• Commitment to compliance with regulatory requirements and internal protocols
• Customer-service oriented approach with a focus on empathy, professionalism, and responsiveness
