Pay: 

The hourly rate for this position is between $21.00 - $33.00 based on the employee's knowledge, skills, and abilities.


Job Summary:

The Trail Planner works with the planning department and provides support for active transportation of all types as well as technical expertise during the approval and construction process of trails. This position works with advisory committees and non-profit groups.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities-

Provides support to the Transportation Division in the Planning Department.

Works with local governments, state agencies, the public and others.

Coordinates with internal and external transportation partners.

Participates in advisory committees and nonprofit groups.  


Conducts in the field inspections of projects both prior to and after construction to verify compliance.

Other duties as assigned.

Job Specifications:  

Required Qualifications-

  • This position requires a thorough understanding of the latest trail-building guidelines and techniques including IMBA (International Mountain Biking Association), AASHTO (American, Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials) and NACTO (National Association of City Transportation Officials) standards
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to form relationships
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines
  • High attention to detail and strong organizational skills
  • Ability to write staff reports and make presentations in public meetings
  • The ability to work independently with limited supervision
  • Must have the ability to travel within the region as needed
  • Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Urban Planning, Geographic Information Systems, Civil Engineering or other related disciple
  • A minimum of two years of experience designing and building active transportation trails


Working Conditions:  

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment. 


Physical Requirements: 

This position requires sitting for long periods of time and performing computer-related work. The individual must be able to lift and carry up to 15 pounds.  Occasionally drives a motor vehicle within the MAG counties.
