About the role:
We are looking for a Staff Platform Engineer to design and evolve the internal platform behind a large engineering and modernization effort at a federal agency. This is a senior, deeply hands-on role. You will build the pipelines, automation, and self-service capabilities that let engineering teams across the agency ship to mission-critical systems quickly, safely, and reliably.
You will set platform standards, drive their adoption, and keep teams from drifting into one-off, fragmented approaches. This is one of several senior platform engineering roles on the team, so you will work closely with other engineers, product, data, and design.
This is expected to be a full-time, project-based position contingent on contract award. While this role is project-specific, Bixal is committed to your long-term success and offers a supportive, inclusive culture that values growth, innovation, and purpose-driven work.
Location:
This is a primarily remote position. While most of the work is expected to be conducted virtually, there is potential for occasional travel for on-site meetings and working sessions at the discretion of the client. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the US. Bixal does not provide visa sponsorship.
The salary range for this role is $150,000 – $155,000. In the spirit of transparency, most offers tend to land near the midpoint of the range. We make compensation decisions thoughtfully, considering your experience, the skills you bring, and our commitment to internal equity. Fairness and transparency are core to how we operate.
Responsibilities:
Design and evolve internal platforms that improve delivery speed, deployment safety, and reliability across teams.
Build and automate infrastructure, delivery pipelines, environment design, and secure provisioning for mission-critical systems.
Standardize observability, environment consistency, and release controls across multiple applications.
Reduce operational toil by building self-service platform capabilities and reusable engineering patterns.
Act as a hands-on platform leader who sets standards, drives adoption, and prevents fragmentation across teams.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of 8 years of demonstrated experience designing and evolving internal developer platforms that improve delivery speed, deployment safety, and reliability across teams.
Deep, hands-on expertise in infrastructure automation, delivery pipelines, environment design, and secure provisioning for mission-critical systems.
Experience on federal, regulated public-sector platforms.
Proven ability to standardize observability, environment consistency, and release controls across multiple applications.
A track record reducing operational toil through self-service platform capabilities and reusable engineering patterns.
Ability to act as a hands-on platform leader who sets standards and drives adoption without creating fragmentation.
Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Public Trust clearance.
Nice to Have Skills and Experience:
Experience with major cloud providers, infrastructure-as-code, and container orchestration.
Experience working alongside agile engineering teams on a regular sprint cadence.
Experience using AI tools to improve development throughput and team efficiency.
