Position Overview
The Senior Counsel, Legal & Compliance serves as in-house legal counsel, providing legal advice and guidance on healthcare regulatory, compliance, corporate, employment, and commercial matters. Reporting to the Chief Legal & Compliance Officer, the Senior Counsel partners with executive leadership and operational teams to identify and mitigate legal risk, ensure compliance with applicable federal and state laws, and support strategic business initiatives through practical legal counsel.
The Senior Counsel leads legal and compliance support for healthcare regulatory compliance, contract management, internal investigations, audit responses, and compliance monitoring activities. The role advises leadership on healthcare laws, reimbursement requirements, privacy regulations, employment matters, and corporate governance while collaborating with the Chief Legal & Compliance Officer on enterprise compliance initiatives. The Senior Counsel also coordinates with outside counsel on specialized legal matters and litigation as appropriate.
 
Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide legal counsel and guidance to executive leadership and business partners on healthcare, regulatory, corporate, employment, and commercial legal matters.
  • Advise the Chief Legal & Compliance Officer and organizational leadership on legal risks associated with strategic initiatives, operational decisions, and regulatory compliance.
  • Interpret and advise on applicable federal and state healthcare laws and regulations, including Medicare, Medicaid, HIPAA, Stark Law, Anti-Kickback Statute, False Claims Act, state licensing requirements, and other applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Draft, review, negotiate, and interpret contracts, including provider agreements, vendor contracts, business associate agreements, confidentiality agreements, and other commercial contracts.
  • Provide legal oversight and guidance for internal compliance audits, investigations, government inquiries, and regulatory reviews.
  • Evaluate legal risks identified through compliance monitoring activities and recommend appropriate corrective actions.
  • Partner with Human Resources, Clinical Operations, and executive leadership to proactively identify and mitigate legal and regulatory risk.
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and legal review of corporate policies, compliance programs, and governance documents.
  • Support responses to subpoenas, record requests, governmental investigations, and other legal matters.
  • Coordinate with and manage outside legal counsel on specialized legal matters and litigation, as directed by the Chief Legal & Compliance Officer.
  • Monitor changes in healthcare laws and regulations and advise leadership regarding organizational impacts and recommended actions.
  • Develop and deliver legal and compliance education for leadership and employees.
  • Prepare legal memoranda, executive briefings, Board materials, presentations, and legal risk assessments.
  • Support mergers, acquisitions, strategic partnerships, and other corporate transactions as assigned.
 
Required Qualifications:
  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
  • Active license to practice law and member in good standing with at least one U.S. state bar.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible legal experience, preferably as in-house or external general counsel in healthcare law, or regulatory compliance.
  • Demonstrated experience advising organizational leadership on complex legal and regulatory matters.
  • Significant experience supporting regulatory audits, investigations, compliance monitoring, and risk assessments.
  • Strong contract drafting, negotiation, legal research, and analytical skills.
  • Excellent written, verbal, negotiation, and presentation skills.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills.
 
Desired Skills:
  • Previous experience as in-house or external general counsel for a healthcare organization.
  • Experience supporting post-acute care, skilled nursing, or value-based care programs.
  • Knowledge of healthcare reimbursement models and payer regulations.
  • Experience collaborating with compliance departments and regulatory agencies.
This remote position follows a location-based compensation structure. The posted salary range is from 165k-180k and represents the potential pay range across various U.S. geographic markets. Actual compensation will be determined based on the candidate’s primary work location, experience, qualifications, and internal equity considerations, in accordance with applicable pay transparency laws.
