Variational AI is redefining the unit economics of drug discovery. We are pushing the state-of-the-art in machine learning, integrated with chemistry and pharmacology expertise, to radically accelerate the development of promising drug candidates. Our team of machine learning researchers and chemists is changing the massive pharmaceutical industry for the better. Over the past five years, we have been advancing the state-of-the-artand delivering projects to customers such as Merck, Rakovina and Immvue Therapeutics. 

We are looking for an experienced drug discovery scientist to join the team and make an impact. You will help us manage various projects by communicating internally and externally to meet project goals. You'll plan, facilitate, execute, and deliver projects within agreed-upon timelines, resources, and objectives. You will contribute to:

  • Project Leadership: Understand the scientific project aims, coordinate team members, and keep the project moving forward by identifying and addressing any issues.
  • Project Planning: Document major objectives and milestones, and resources required, and work with scientific/technical leads to map out tasks and timelines.
  • Project Communication: Establish and coordinate communication methods, including regular team meetings, individual break-out meetings, and sub-team meetings. Maintain and distribute regular updates on project status to stakeholders.


No knowledge of machine learning is required for this role, but you should possess a strong interest in learning about this promising technology, coupled with hands-on drug discovery experience.


Here is the background we’re looking for:

  • Ph.D. in synthetic organic chemistry, computational chemistry or medicinal chemistry with experience managing drug discovery projects in an industrial setting.
  • Three or more years’ experience working in small molecule drug discovery in the pharma/biotech/CRO industry.
  • Professional experience with two or more core competencies:  medicinal chemistry, molecular modeling techniques, pharmacology and/or synthetic organic chemistry.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with customers and integrate the voice of the customer with internal stakeholders to meet project demands.  
  • Proficiency with multidisciplinary project integration.  
  • Evidence of creative approaches to solve problems of pharmaceutical interest.
  • Ability to communicate, collaborate, delegate and deliver results in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Familiarity with multiple drug target classes. 
  • Intellectual curiosity and drive to excel.
