Participants will use a new Android phone as their primary device for one month and document their experiences through nine diary entries. Additionally, they will participate in a 60-minute remote interview to discuss their setup and usage experience.
We're running a paid study on what it's actually like to set up and live with a brand-new Android phone. We want to understand where the first month goes smoothly and where it gets confusing — from unboxing and data migration to discovering features weeks later. This research feeds directly into how mobile operating systems guide people through setup.
This study asks more of you than a typical survey. We would rather you know everything up front than discover it halfway through.
You buy the phone yourself, and we reimburse you in full. You will purchase either a Google Pixel 11 or a Samsung Galaxy Z Flip8 between 28 September and 4 October 2026, in person at a Telekom, Vodafone or O2 store in Germany. You pay at the time of purchase. We reimburse the full device price in two payments. The $368 study compensation is separate and on top of that reimbursement.
The phone becomes your main phone for a month. You will transfer your SIM to the new device and use it as your primary phone for the duration of the study.
The study needs some data from the device. You will install an app that provides the device identifiers, and keep "Usage & Diagnostics" switched on in settings for the length of the study.
If any of that does not work for you, this is not the right study — and that is completely fine.
You apply and complete a short screening questionnaire.
If selected, you buy the phone between 28 September and 4 October 2026.
Between 28 September and 30 October you complete nine short diary entries, roughly 15 to 20 minutes each. You can answer in writing, or with photos, audio or video — whichever suits you.
Between 9 and 13 November you join one 60-minute remote interview over Zoom.
Your compensation is issued once your participation is approved.
We are looking for everyday consumers in Germany, 18 or older, who were already thinking about buying a new phone. You should be the person who decides which phone you buy. You do not need to be technical — in fact, we specifically want people who are not.
