Position Overview:
The Manager, Energy Storage Engineering serves as MN8's technical lead for Energy Storage Systems across the asset lifecycle, supporting acquisition due diligence, project development, engineering execution, commissioning, and fleet operations. The role provides company-wide technical leadership on BESS matters, manages external engineering resources, and develops internal engineering capabilities, including recruiting and leading a distributed energy storage engineering team.
As the Manager, ESS Engineering Lead, you will:
Serve as MN8's subject matter expert for utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems.
Develop, maintain, and continuously improve company standards, specifications, and engineering requirements for BESS projects and operating assets.
Establish design philosophies and technical guidance.
Serve as the primary technical escalation point for complex BESS issues and partner with internal and external subject matter experts to develop solutions.
Support the development and maintenance of MN8's energy storage technology roadmap and identify opportunities for continuous improvement and innovation.
Lead evaluation of emerging technologies, OEM offerings, and market trends.
Support the development and execution of fleet strategies related to augmentation planning, warranty administration, degradation management, performance optimization, and end-of-life planning.
Build lessons-learned processes across the BESS portfolio.
Provide technical leadership and serve as the primary ESS engineering interface for Due Diligence, Development, Project Execution, Asset Management, and Operations teams on complex BESS matters.
Lead external engineering consultants and OEM relationships.
Support negotiations with EPCs and BESS equipment and integrator providers on technical items such as scope, performance guarantees.
Lead major incident investigations and root-cause analyses related to operating BESS systems.
Develop and mentor internal energy storage engineering capabilities.
Establish processes, tools, and standards to improve engineering execution and operational performance.
Recruit, onboard, and directly manage distributed energy storage engineering resources, including establishing team objectives, mentoring engineers, delegating technical responsibilities, and fostering a high-performance engineering culture.
Our ideal candidate will have:
Bachelor’s degree in engineering; Masters preferred.
5+ years of experience in power generation, renewable energy, or energy storage engineering.
3+ years of experience in Utility Scale BESS Engineering with excellent understanding of BESS.
Demonstrated experience supporting utility-scale BESS projects through development, execution, commissioning, and operations.
Demonstrated expertise in utility-scale BESS engineering, including several of the following areas: system architecture, grid integration, controls and EMS, performance analytics, augmentation planning, warranty administration, and system troubleshooting.
Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional initiatives and manage technical resources, including consultants, contractors, or direct reports.
Proficient in: HomerPro, AutoCAD , Excel, Bluebeam, Word, Smartsheet.
Very organized and able to multitask effectively.
Good communication both written and verbal skill.
Demonstrated ability to problem solve and determination to complete difficult projects.
Demonstrated ability to improve processes and create efficiencies.
Highly developed sense of professional ethics and commitment to quality.
Ability to work both on a team as well as independently.
Ability to communicate effectively with tact and diplomacy.
Preferred:
Experience within an IPP or owner-operator environment.
Experience managing major OEM relationships.
Experience developing engineering standards and organizational processes.
Demonstrated leadership potential to build and lead high-performing engineering teams and expand technical organizational capabilities.
Experience recruiting, mentoring, or managing engineers across geographically distributed teams.
