Junior Lecturer: Risk and Governance

The Position

We are recruiting to appoint either a Lecturer or a Junior Lecturer for this post.

The School of Professional Accounting is seeking a motivated and capable lecturer to join its BCom in Accounting team within the Undergraduate Department as Lecturer in the Risk and Governance (R & G) Theme Team. The Theme develops students' understanding of auditing, governance, risk management, business information systems, legal and ethical responsibilities, and professional practice, preparing them to make sound decisions in complex organisational environments. The successful candidate will primarily be responsible for teaching second- and third-year undergraduate modules designed to prepare accounting students for the professional environment.

This role is well suited to both emerging and experienced academics or professionals who are passionate about teaching and developing future accountants.

Experience with an online learning platform is advantageous but not required.

All staff in the school work remotely, and therefore, applications from anywhere in South Africa will be accepted.

Some important aspects to take note of, given that our working environment differs from a standard educational institution in a number of ways:

1. Research expectation

This role, along with all our current permanent academic positions, does not carry with it an expectation for the performance of any formal research. Learning and reflecting is an important part of our values and we seek to apply best practice in all that we do. However, our focus is not on formal research output and, as such, our systems and processes are not designed to either support or reward individuals committed to traditional research.

2. After-hours availability

Our programmes are designed to be flexible and accommodate students who find themselves in a wide range of circumstances, specifically including working students. As a result, we offer synchronous, online live sessions to our students after-hours on a weekly basis – these occur between 5:30pm and 7:30pm on weeknights (Monday to Thursday). Additionally, academic staff members are expected to be available for after-hours online, and one-on-one consultations with students for a few hours each week, either in the evenings or early in the mornings before working hours.

3. Remote working and travel expectations

The majority of our team works entirely online, as our courses are completely online. Therefore, all members of staff are expected to have a stable and reliable source of access to the internet, a backup plan in case of loadshedding and a suitable home office environment. (IT equipment, including a laptop, screen and other essentials will be provided by Milpark.)

Additionally, the team gathers in person in Cape Town roughly 4 times per year and so members of staff located elsewhere in the country are expected to travel to Cape Town for those meetings, which may require up to three nights away at a time. (The cost of this travel is covered by Milpark.)

4. Salary bands

Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include:

• Delivering second and third year modules within the R & G theme.
• Collaborating with colleagues on assessment design, moderation, and quality assurance to ensure alignment with SAICA competency frameworks and Milpark standards.
• Working collaboratively with all staff of the department.
• Material development and maintenance.
• Live online session delivery to large groups of students
• One-on-one consultations with students and responding to student queries via the respective online platforms within reasonable turnaround times.
• Assessment setting, marking and administration.
• Participating in departmental meetings, contributing to programme reviews and performing administrative tasks relevant to the role.
• Fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment where students feel encouraged to participate, ask questions, and explore complex concepts applicable to professional accountants.

Professional Development, Collaboration and Engagement:

• Stay abreast of developments in the relevant fields of risk and governance and continuously update and enhance knowledge and skills through professional development activities.
• Collaborate with colleagues within the School of Professional Accounting and across other departments or disciplines to promote interdisciplinary learning and collaboration.
• Engage with industry partners, professional associations, and regulatory bodies to ensure that the curriculum remains relevant and responsive to the evolving needs of the accounting profession.

Education & Experience Requirements

• Relevant NQF level 8 qualification (BCom Honours in Accounting or Post Graduate Diploma in Accounting).
• Demonstrated expertise in relevant areas of risk and governance with sufficient experience that intersects with accounting, auditing, finance and law.
• Previous experience teaching risk, auditing and/or governance at the undergraduate or postgraduate level, preferably in a professional or vocational context.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. Basic use of Microsoft Excel.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and inspire students from diverse backgrounds.
• Excellent organisational and time management abilities, with a commitment to delivering high-quality teaching and assessment outcomes.
• A collaborative and collegial approach to working with colleagues, students, and external stakeholders.

Key Selection Criteria 

• Technical competence in risk, auditing and/ or governance applicable to professional accountants at an undergraduate level.
• While technical knowledge is important, equal emphasis is placed on the ability to engage students, simplify complex concepts, and facilitate applied learning.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• A passion for developing students through genuine care.
• An industrious and gregarious attitude with the ability to learn, solve problems, innovate and complete tasks without close supervision.
• Emotional intelligence with an aptitude and desire to build relationships.
• Applicants may come from various professional backgrounds. CA(SA) designation (or eligibility) is strongly preferred.
• Advanced to moderate IT competence.
