The Department of Curriculum, Instruction, and Special Education (CISE) in the UVA School of Education and Human Development seeks applicants for an experienced teacher educator to serve as an Academic Program Officer within the CISE Department. CISE offers a range of educator preparation programs in teacher education, reading education, and special education.

Reporting to the Director of Teacher Education, the Academic Program Officer will be responsible for addressing the needs of students in several of CISE’s online programs, including the M.Ed. in Special Education, the M.T. in Special Education, and the M.T. in English as a Second Language. The Academic Program Officer will also play a role in the development and implementation of Grow Your Own programs for teaching assistants and provisionally licensed teachers working toward licensure. Duties will include day-to-day operations of CISE programs as well as leading initiatives to improve academic operations within the department.

We seek a candidate who is enthusiastic about helping to shape the department’s culture and practices and who can adapt through a process of continuous improvement to meet stakeholders' needs. The incumbent must have excellent communication skills to be effective in building relationships with faculty, academic departments, and school division partners.

Responsibilities include:

  • Serve as a point of contact for students and faculty on matters related to course enrollment, program requirements, policies and procedures, and other administrative matters.
  • Monitor students’ academic progress with faculty advisors. Coordinate with Student Affairs to help students access university resources as appropriate. Collaborate with faculty, staff, and course instructors to support students facing heightened personal challenges.
  • Support the implementation of clinical experiences (practicum and internship) for online students.
  • Collaborate with school division partners on the development and implementation of Grow Your Own programs and alternative pathways to licensure.
  • Develop synchronous programming and asynchronous materials for orientations, advising, and community events. Maintain program Canvas sites.
  • Work with faculty and instructors to maintain and update Canvas course templates.
  • Collaborate on projects related to advising, academic support, accreditation, and continuous program improvement as determined by the Director of Teacher Education and the Program Coordinators.

Many online students are working professionals, so some evening hours will be required to provide student support.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree required, Master’s degree is strongly preferred.

Experience: 2+ years of relevant professional experience required, at least 3 years of experience is strongly preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Terminal degree (or ABD) in teaching and learning, curriculum and instruction, reading education, special education, or a related field
  • Teaching license and/or experience teaching and working in preK-12 schools
  • Experience teaching and working in a higher education setting
  • Relevant professional experience in advising, curriculum development, and/or program implementation and evaluation
  • Experience implementing new initiatives and evaluating those initiatives
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and technology skills

Physical Demands

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers.

The hiring range is $70,000-$80,000, commensurate with education and experience.

This position is fully remote and may be performed outside of Charlottesville, VA, in alignment with UVA’s remote work guidelines.
