About the role

We're looking for a Data Architect to lead the design and evolution of the data platform for our client. This is a hands-on architecture role: you'll own the target-state design across ingestion, transformation, storage, and consumption on Databricks and AWS, and you'll stay close enough to the code to prototype, review, and unblock the engineering team. You'll act as the technical counterpart to the client's data and engineering stakeholders — translating business needs into architecture decisions, defending trade-offs, and setting the standards the rest of the data team builds against. Success looks like a platform that is well-governed, cost-aware, and trusted by the business.

What You'll do

• Define and document the target data architecture (medallion/lakehouse layers, data models, contracts, integration patterns) and drive it from design to production.
• Lead architecture and design reviews for pipelines built by the data engineering team; set coding, testing, and deployment standards.
• Own data governance: Unity Catalog structure, access model, lineage, data quality rules, and PII handling.
• Design and optimize ingestion and transformation pipelines (batch and streaming) on Databricks/Spark over AWS sources.
• Partner directly with client stakeholders — engineering, analytics, and business — to gather requirements, present options, and get architectural decisions approved.
• Guide cost and performance optimization (cluster/warehouse sizing, storage layout, partitioning, workload isolation).
• Mentor senior and mid-level data engineers, and provide technical input into hiring and team growth.
• Contribute to roadmap planning and estimate effort for new data initiatives

Required Qualifications

• 7+ years in data engineering/data platform work, with at least 2–3 years in an architect or lead role.

• Databricks in production: Delta Lake, Unity Catalog, workflows/jobs, SQL warehouses, performance tuning.

• Strong Apache Spark (PySpark and Spark SQL) — able to reason about execution plans, shuffles, and optimization.

• AWS data services: S3, IAM, Glue, Lambda, networking fundamentals.

• Advanced SQL and dimensional/data modeling (star schema, slowly changing dimensions, data vault a plus).

• Design and operation of production ELT/ETL pipelines, orchestration, CI/CD, and infrastructure-as-code.

• Data governance and security practice: access control, lineage, cataloging, data quality frameworks, PII/compliance handling.

• Demonstrated ability to produce architecture artifacts (diagrams, decision records, standards) and defend them with stakeholders.

Nice to have

• • SQL Server experience (high priority) — T-SQL, SSMS, SSIS, stored procedure logic, and experience migrating or integrating SQL Server workloads into a lakehouse.
  • Experience with legacy-to-modern data platform migrations.
  • BI tooling exposure (Power BI, Tableau) and semantic layer design.
  • Streaming/CDC experience (Structured Streaming, Kafka, Debezium, Lakeflow/DLT).
  • FinOps or cloud cost optimization experience.
  • Prior experience in a consultancy or client-facing delivery model.
