The Sr. Software Engineer will be a hands-on, technically-capable and delivery-focused leader who contributes through the design, development, test and maintenance of system features. You will work closely with all scrum team members, translating detailed business requirements into technical solutions, collaborating with other stakeholders and IT teams for solution delivery.What you'll do...Design solutions for secure, scalable and high-quality business features with the guidance of the ArchitectDevelop, test, and iterate on MVP solutions to operationalize new features and productsCollaborate with other teams, designing and implementing integrated featuresLeverage DevOps and CI/CD/CT practices to optimize deliveryCreate and maintain appropriate technical documentation and other project artifactsIdentify, diagnose and solve problems - supporting production issues where necessaryDrive technical excellence within the software development community of practiceProvide mentoring and assistance to other team membersImplement and maintain the necessary controls and procedures to cost-effectively protect information systemsWork with Product Owners and technical leadership to align product outcomes in a dynamic environmentAbout you....A great communicator who is able to articulate technical concepts in plain languageContinuous learner seeking out new solutions, technologies, and methodologies to drive improvementProblem solver who is delivery and outcome focusedProactive and vocal team player, who likes working in a dynamic environment and sharing ideasYou are able to build relationships and are a trusted advisor to IT and the businessDemonstrated ability to multi-task and manage multiple projects simultaneouslyAs a Sr Software Engineer you should have the following experience and skills...Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, other related field or work experience/certification5+ years of software design and development experience ideally with the following languages and frameworks - C#, .NET, Angular, JavaScript, Ruby, Cucumber, Specflow5+ years of experience with relational databases and SQL - MS SQL Server preferredExperience creating modern web applications and APIsExperience with DevOps both using and developing CI/CD/CT pipelines, test automation and cloud deploymentsTechnical understanding of hardware, server O/S, and application connectivity between servers, the internet and other integrated technologiesExperience with management and maintenance of infrastructure - Windows Servers, Azure resourcesExperience creating solutions using custom development, off the shelf systems, and 3rd party integrationsExperience in diagnosing system and application issues with excellent analytical skillsExperience with the Agile FrameworkAbility to lead and coach, ideally with experience leading agile teamsAbility to work with a high degree of independenceExperience gained in either an insurance/insurance-related business or a fast-paced financial services environmentPlease note: Markel has a phased approach for re-entry into our buildings that is designed to balance the ongoing health, safety, and well-being of our employees with operational considerations and regulatory/ governmental requirements and recommendations. Remote working is still the preferred method of working for most positions at this time. Effective 6/1/21 we will implement a return to work strategy that allows for three days in the office every other week.
