The Frederick National Laboratory is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc. The lab addresses some of the most urgent and intractable problems in the biomedical sciences in cancer and AIDS, drug development and first-in-human clinical trials, applications of nanotechnology in medicine, and rapid response to emerging threats of infectious diseases.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Cancer Research Technology Program (CRTP) at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research (FNLCR) develops and implements emerging technology, cancer biology expertise and research capabilities to accomplish National Cancer Institute (NCI) research objectives.

The CRTP is an outward-facing, multi-disciplinary hub purposed to enable the external cancer research community. The National Cancer Institute, NIH, has established a national cancer research community-accessible cryo-EM user facility (NCEF) that is managed and operated by CRTP/FNLCR.

The NCEF's purpose is to provide high-quality, high-resolution cryo-EM images on state-of-the-art equipment to the cancer research community. The facility addresses the pressing national and regional need of US structural biologists to have access to advanced microscopes capable of supporting high resolution cryo-EM studies.

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES

In contributing to the NCEF's mission, the successful candidate will develop and maintain the NCEF's data pipeline, data quality control measures, and website. Specifically, the Software Developer will perform the following:

  • Develop and maintain workflows for high-throughput transfer and quality control of cryo-EM images
  • Set up network connections and networked storage devices supporting high-throughput data transfer
  • Coordinate NCEF infrastructure needs with IT support department
  • Maintain and support server storage and work with IT support on any potential issues
  • Work closely with NCEF staff on software development and implementation needs
  • Develop and maintain efficient workflows, feedback, and progress reports on projects
  • Set up and maintain a system to provide microscope updates and imaging information to users

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

This is a dual level requisition. It may be filled at either a Software Developer III or Software Developer IV level depending on the years of relevant experience and qualifications. To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:

Level III

  • Possession of a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related degree from an accredited college or university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). Experience can be considered in lieu of degree
  • Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency
  • In addition to the education requirements, a minimum of five (5) years of related experience is required

Level IV

  • Possession of a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related degree from an accredited college or university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). Experience can be considered in lieu of degree
  • Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency
  • In addition to the education requirements, a minimum of eight (8) years of related experience is required

All levels

  • Experience with programming in Python
  • Experience with command line linux environment and linux scripting
  • Experience with troubleshooting network and computational performance issues
  • Good verbal and written communications skills
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:

  • Experience in data management and data analytics
  • Experience building and maintaining linux servers
  • Experience in running analytical data reports
  • Experience in developing and managing business system user workflows
  • Experience with developing and customizing external websites using third party web frameworks including backend web interfaces
  • Experience with network/system administration and network maintenance
