Position Summary:
CVS Health is seeking a Senior Software Development Engineer to design, develop, and implement digital solutions and systems by applying advanced technical expertise to architect and code software applications, with a strong emphasis on generative AI integration and spec-driven development practices. Responsibilities include conducting system testing and debugging, collaborating with cross-functional teams, building AI-augmented workflows using Claude agents and tools, and contributing to the overall technical direction and innovation of digital engineering projects.
Skills & Experience We're Excited About:
- Proven experience in designing, developing, and deploying microservices-based applications, ensuring scalability and maintainability
- Strong expertise in building server-side applications using Node.js and TypeScript, with a solid understanding of asynchronous programming and event-driven architecture
- Experience with testing frameworks and methodologies, ensuring code quality through unit testing, integration testing, and code reviews
- Hands-on experience with various relational and non-relational databases such as PostgreSQL, Redis, and OpenSearch, with a strong understanding of data modeling and query optimization
- Demonstrated ability to analyze complex problems, identify root causes, and implement effective solutions in a timely manner
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Experience leveraging generative AI tools (particularly Claude) to accelerate development, including AI-assisted code generation, debugging, and documentation
- Strong ability to write clear, comprehensive specifications that can guide both human developers and AI agents in implementation
- Understanding of how to design, implement, and orchestrate Claude agents, workflows, and skills to automate complex development tasks
It Would Be Great If You Also Have:
- Familiarity with Agile development practices, including Scrum and Kanban, with a track record of participating in sprint planning, daily stand-ups, and retrospectives
- A proven track record of working effectively in cross-functional teams, fostering a collaborative environment, and contributing to team success
- Experience with the Express framework for building RESTful APIs, including middleware implementation and routing
- Knowledge of cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP) and their services, particularly in relation to deploying and managing microservices - Especially on AWS
- Hands-on experience with the Anthropic SDK and Claude API for building AI-powered applications
- Experience creating custom Claude skills and multi-step agent workflows for development automation
- Background in spec-driven or design-first development methodologies (e.g., writing detailed technical specs, API contracts, or behavior specifications before coding)
- Knowledge of AI safety practices and responsible AI development patterns
Required Qualifications:
- 5+ years of software engineering experience
- 3+ years of experience in at least one of the following: Node.js, JavaScript, TypeScript or SQL
- 3+ years of experience with spec-driven development practices, including writing detailed specifications before implementation
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with generative AI tools and LLM-based development workflows
- Understanding of prompt engineering and AI workflow orchestration
- Experience in Microservice and Serverless Architectures
- Experience in open source frameworks
- Experience in Agile practices
- Experience building applications with Claude APIs, agents, or similar LLM platforms
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience (HS diploma + 4 years relevant experience)

Pay Range
The typical pay range for this role is:
$92,700.00 - $185,400.00
This pay range represents the base hourly rate or base annual full-time salary for all positions in the job grade within which this position falls. The actual base salary offer will depend on a variety of factors including experience, education, geography and other relevant factors. This position is eligible for a CVS Health bonus, commission or short-term incentive program in addition to the base pay range listed above.
