Job Summary

This well-known name within financial services is recruiting a number of new software engineers, including a Senior Java Developer, into their Manchester office to work on their core finance management platform using Java 16 / Spring. Working either Hybrid or remote (must be based in the UK) you will be responsible for helping to drive engineering standards and contribute to technical discussions/help to make software design decisions.

For success in this role, you should be an experienced senior software engineer / Java Developer - this means that you will have a proven track record of either mentoring juniors, leading on smaller projects/integrations/customisations, or have a solid understanding and ability within software design/architecture.

This is very much a progression opportunity, too, so the desire to push on to become either a Tech Lead, Principal Developer / Engineer, or else a Technical Architect would be beneficial.

Role Responsibilities

• Giving strong technical input to ensure improvement of existing products, as well as the build of brand new products going forward
• Setting standards and engineering best practice - whether these means driving properly annotated code, Agile ways of working pushing proper testing and code reviews, you should lead by example
• Mentoring juniors - we take a bottom-up approach, where the junior engineers will ask questions about technology, practise, design patterns etc. so as much as they push you, you should push them to learn new things and show them how a mature SDLC should look

About You

• You'll come from a strong technical background, with an understanding of not just how to write code, but also why it works
• Desire for continuous improvement is important - good, quality code that's well-tested and works first time should be a point of pride for you
• You should be experienced with building scaleable, web-based platforms deploying to cloud
• Industry experience, whilst not essential, will only help. If you have worked on financial platforms with millions of lines of code before, then that's great.

Technical Background

• Strong background/knowledge of Core Java and software engineering principles. We're looking for true software engineers, not web devs, so the basic understanding of how and why code can be manipulated is important
• You'll be a natural problem solver with a logical mind
• The every-day tenets of this position will be Java, data, APIs - this should be your bread and butter.
