Job Description

Purpose of Job We are seeking a talented Research Engineer Lead- IT for our San Antonio, TX facility. This person may also work remotely in a 100% Remote Work Environment.

This position is for an experienced technical research engineer with a background in financial services. This Research Engineer will be assigned to the USAA Labs Advanced Research team conducting research and building prototypes ranging from H1-H3 technologies across a broad spectrum of USAA relevant industries. We are specifically looking to assign this Research Engineer to our Decentralized Finance focus area, so experience in banking and financial services is preferred. Experience in one or more of the following technologies is preferred, but not all are expected: cloud services, distributed ledgers, Big Data, AI, ML, Explainable & Ethical AI, Augmented and Virtual Reality (or other immersive experiences), 5G and edge computing.

Strong communication (verbal and written) and influencing skills are essential. Research Engineer's in the AR space are required to fluidly cross between business and IT audiences and manage complex external vendor and partner relationships. A successful applicant should be highly adaptable and adept at managing multiple workstreams at once with a high level of autonomy. The Research Engineer Lead should be comfortable with minimal structure and will be expected to have demonstrated an ability to independently build functional technical prototypes and pilots, as well as an ability to conduct research and produce executive level whitepapers and point of views. The Research Engineer Lead should be able to advise leadership on adoption of H3 solutions as well as direct the creation of roadmaps and strategies for enterprise adoption of innovative solutions.

Plans and conducts research efforts to identify, investigate, evaluate, and explore capabilities and limitations associated with current, emerging, and potentially disruptive technologies in support of business and/or technology-focused initiatives, roadmaps, and strategies. Research may include a range of activities to include literature searches, evaluations of the external landscape, vendor partnerships, experimentation, development of functioning applications, written reports, presentations, and collaboration with teams across the Enterprise. Applies working knowledge of applicable business practices and IT processes to tailor recommendations and deliver insights to meet customer needs.

Tasks:

  • Identifies and manages existing and emerging risks that stem from business activities and the job role.
  • Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled.

  • Leads and conducts most complex research assessments utilizing highly developed research and competitive technical intelligence efforts to identify emerging technological trends, opportunities and threats, and/or potentially disruptive technologies.
  • Maintains and communicates awareness of the external landscape, to include technology trends in the industry and assessments of vendor capabilities, to include initiation of strategic partnerships or investments as required.
  • Leads the planning and execution of hands-on experimentation and/or prototype development, when required, to further research objectives.
  • Seeks out collaboration opportunities and build trusted relationships with internal and external partners to increase the impact of research efforts in support of business initiatives and roadmaps, and in alignment with USAA business and technical strategies.
  • Leads efforts to generate and protect intellectual property.
  • Provides subject matter expertise and facilitate planning for integration of new capabilities into the Enterprise.
  • Communicates research results and recommendations through written reports, presentations, and/or demonstrations to influence business and/or technical strategies; provides team with best practices for impactful communications.
  • Provides mentorship and professional guidance to other researchers.

Minimum requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics related field; OR 4 additional years of Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics related experience (in addition to the minimum years of experience required) may be substituted in lieu of degree.
  • 8 years of experience conducting technical research, analysis, testing, and/or prototype design and development of hardware or software solutions.
  • Expert knowledge in current IT infrastructure and/or software development tools/methodologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to rapidly learn and apply technical skills through experimentation and without resources typically available for established technologies.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills that demonstrate the ability to explain complex ideas and assert influence.
  • Extensive experience developing and executing test plans, analyzing results, and communicating conclusions and recommendations.
  • Extensive testing and learning in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience analyzing, researching, and prototyping new hardware or software solutions and developing and implementing best practices.
  • Demonstrated mastery of research best practices and knowledge of risk management policies and procedures.

Preferred experience:

  • 3 or more years of experience in the banking and financial services industry
  • Experience in one or more of the following technologies is preferred, but not all are expected: cloud services, distributed ledgers, Big Data, AI, ML, Explainable & Ethical AI, Augmented and Virtual Reality (or other immersive experiences), 5G and edge computing
  • Working experience with cloud technologies, such as AWS and Terraform.
  • 1+ year of Talon experience or working knowledge of DevOps with Docker and Linux
  • Full Stack software development experience preferred with previous exposure to both front-end and back-end programming languages
  • Working knowledge of blockchain or decentralize ledger technologies, such as Hyperledger Indy/Aries/Ursa.

Compensation:

USAA has an effective method for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market position. The salary range for this skill is: $135,200 - 243,500*.

Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance or at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.

Geographical Differential: Geographic pay differential is additional pay provided to eligible employees working in locations where market pay levels are above the national average.

Shift premium: will be addressed on an individual-basis for applicable roles that are consistently scheduled for non-core hours.
