Lonza has an excellent opportunity for an experienced Remote- IP Division Head/ Sr. Legal Counsel, to oversee all aspects of intellectual property for our Cell & Gene Technologies & Bioscience Division (C&G Division). In a global capacity the incumbent division head provides IP and business related support to the C&G Division including transactional support and establishing and driving IP strategy for the division. The incumbent division head will lead an IP team to establish and achieve setdepartment and division goals. The role of the incumbent division head will require an ability to address complex global IP issues (requiring engagement and knowledge in key jurisdictions of EP, US, CN) and engage with business leadership and agency authorities. The incumbent will be required to have a strong understanding of C&G Division technology and resolve legal issues impacting the division and business unit strategy.

Key responsibilities:

  • Serve as a trusted advisor and partner to the C&G Division and underlying Cell and Gene Technologies business unit in navigating an evolving business and intellectual property law landscape
  • Develop and execute a global IP strategy for the C&G Division and the Cell and Gene Technologies business unit
  • Manageintellectual property portfolio in strategic alignment with business needs and priorities, including preparation, prosecution, maintenance and/or defense of US and foreign patent filings and patent office administrative actions directly or supervising outside counsel
  • Establish, negotiate and provide counselling for intellectual property-related transactions, including drafting and negotiating agreements independently or jointly with in-house corporate counsel.
  • Conduct due diligence assessments and counseling based on these assessments, including freedom-to-operate, infringement and validity analyses, and risk evaluation and mitigation
  • Work with other functions and project teams on IP activities with cross-functional ramifications such as litigation, mergers and acquisitions
  • Drive implementation of corporate global IP policies and support and promote IP awareness within all functions of C&G Division
  • Manage exempt or non-exempt employees, including employee career counseling and performance evaluation.

Key Requirements:

  • Minimum of 10 years working as a patent attorney and counseling clients on intellectual property issues
  • Juris Doctor from accredited law school and admitted to a US State Bar in good standing
  • Bachelors Degree in Biology, Biomedical Engineering, or Biotechnology, or similar field
  • Advanced degree preferred
  • Demonstrated experience managing and supervising attorneys and staff desired
  • Previous corporate in-house experience preferred.
