Why do we love building Make (and why you might, too)?

We’re a team of developers, and it’s second nature for us to whip up a solution with some coding. But what about folks who aren’t developers or don’t have one in their corner? They could get trapped in a monotonous cycle of tedious tasks, shuffling data around, and missing out on doing things that really matter. That’s where Make comes in. We’ve created a space where anyone can craft powerful automations that are as intuitive and fun as playing a game. We’re here to share the buzz of creating something awesome that works like a charm and to turn everyday individuals into makers.

What you’ll do

Make is a visual platform that uses color, motion, and a highly interactive UI to help people develop their automations. We are looking for a Principal Product Designer who wants to take our design language into the future. We’re looking for someone who is ready to push our visual boundaries into new directions, but also be open and collaborative to translate that into practical and useful changes that get built into our product. You’ll work directly with Make’s co-founder to conceptualize these visions, but also very directly with our existing design team to make this vision a reality.

Why design matters

We believe that design creates value for customers–powerful features are only great when they come to life through how the product makes people feel. The concepts you create will be the future of Make, rooted in the core values of today’s Make. Our ideal candidate lives and breathes the intersection of aesthetics, experience, and possibility as it relates to building amazing products. This role is an opportunity to significantly impact the future of Make. It’s a role for someone who sees every pixel, but also craves knowing the why and how it matters to customers.

This role is ⅓ design strategy (what is the visual direction for the future of Make??), ⅓ design language (how can this visual direction be infused into the product), and ⅓ design execution (working in partnership with the other designers to bring the experience to life)

What we are looking for

  • A Product Designer with strong UI skills who believes that working in diverse teams and complex problem spaces brings out even more creativity
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in visual design for products
  • Written and verbal fluency in English
  • A genuine interest in understanding how developers think and translating that to broader audiences through the experience
  • Hands-on experience with developing visual systems and patterns that are coherent to the company brand and style
  • Proficient in applying motion and animation design to the experience
  • Ability to articulate a design rationale and goals to different levels of stakeholders
  • Detail oriented and can think expansively about variations and constraints (e.g. mobile, accessibility, dark mode)
  • Ability to give & receive constructive feedback in design reviews
  • Portfolio of prior design work, with examples of shipped products including specific contributions in the design directions and decisions
  • Written and verbal fluency in English
  • Bonus points for people with experience in video game design and/or mixed & augmented reality

Please, send us your portfolio of prior design work, with examples of shipped products including specific contributions in the design directions and decisions
